I am on my 3rd Nokia 6102 now, all for the same reason. The volume up button goes bad. On the 3rd phone, now in my hands for less than 2 weeks, I decided to take it apart and see what happens. It appears that any excessive pressure, like sitting down with it in your pocket, peels the volume up button off the printed circuit board and renders it inop. I took the phone apart, soldered the button back on, and built a small ridge of JB Weld Epoxy around the buttons, to prevent them from getting pressed on too hard. Sorry the photos suck. My macro focused on the wrong part, but the button has 4 contacts, and the outer 2 get pulled off. A light touch with the solder gun worked great to reattatch. All the outer covers were snap on and 4 torx screws is all that came out to gain the access. Have to take the top cover off to get to the top 2.

Re: Nokia 6102 volume button disassembly and repair

Help, please!!! I am getting so frustrated with this phone. I haven't even had it for a year and my volume button is not working. This is the only phone I have and rely on it very much. I can't get the cover off. I have the battery cover off and my battery out but can't do the rest. I don't have a torx but even if I did.......is it for the 2 little screw like looking things under the battery?

You need to remove the top cover of the phone where the antenna is as well, to find the other two torx screws, as noted by the original poster. Then you have to take the other cover portion off after removing the screws. Even if you get the phone apart, you need to use a soldering iron to connect the micro button back to the computer board. This is a very small piece and unless you have done this sort of stuff before, you may be better off letting a pro or friend who knows what they are doing to do it. Total time for me was 20 minutes. I could probably do it in 5-10 minutes now that I did it once before. But I have done computer board soldering and taking phones and stuff apart for many many years. Good luck!

Where do I find a torx driver small enough to remove the screws?

    Hi!
Thanks for the repairing guide, it was useful for me on the same kind of broken volume button on a 6103. Seems its a typical weakness of this phone family.
    Cheers

    Thanks loads pilotguy!

Saw your post awhile ago and finally did it. It seemed as if ATT doesn't have any decent phones know for a reasonable price. After looking for a new phone, rather than signing up for 2 years with a sub par phone, I was going to get my friend to solder the button back on (2 of the 4 spots were off). I figured that it would be easier just to do the pin trick since the button might just break again. It is now working at full volume just fine.

My wife is happy because she has been using the phone on ppp for several months. The funny thing is that my duaghter's phone hasn't had the same problem yet. Both phones were bought in June of 2006.

I got a Torx set on eBay also (T4,5,6,7). Cost $9.35 which included shipping.

I just realized that I saw the pin trick elsewhere. I think maybe Youtube?

It's a little tricky because I had to tape down the SIM card, hold the battery in place with the phone disassembled, and then turn on the phone. You have to get everything in the right place or you will get error messages. I had my daughter touch a pin across 2 of the contacts. I think that the top 2 (outer and inner) put the phone in volume setting mode and the bottom 2 changed the volume. We set it to 10 and left it. If you don't want to solder this will give you a permanent setting. I also broke the down button on purpose so it wouldn't reset to low volume by accident.
