It seems Nokia has finally taken a hint from its competitors. At least as far as phone releases are concerned. The developers have been hard at work on new phones and suddenly you find yourself with multiple choices from the Nokia Lumia series unlike the same time last year when you just had 3-4 cell phones to choose from. This post is going to be about its latest release the Nokia Lumia 928. What do you think? Was it really required? How much of a difference is there? How do you compare? You equate it with the best of course. Here, we will be comparing it with the Samsung Galaxy S4. The S4 absolutely crushed the Lumia 920. Let’s see how it stands up to the Lumia 928.

    1. Size and weight - In terms of size the Galaxy S4 has all the right proportions. The length of the phone is more than the Lumia 928. But, that is understandable as they have to accommodate a larger screen. But in terms of width and thickness, the Galaxy S4 is easier to hold on to as compared to the Lumia 928. Nokia has managed to reduce the weight of the Lumia 928 though from the bulky 185g of the Lumia 920 to 162g. It still can’t compare with the 130g Galaxy S4 though. Clearly, the Galaxy S4 can sweep the floor with the Lumia 928 everyday of the week.

    2. Display - Nothing has changed here. The Lumia 928 and the Lumia 920 have exactly the same display. Both are stunning but when you consider that Samsung have managed to provide a higher pixel density on a larger screen, you have to give them the point here. Don’t misunderstand; the display on the Lumia 928 is great, better than any other smartphone with a 4.5” or bigger screen. It’s just that the level of detail on the Galaxy S4 tends to catch more eyes.

    3. Memory & Storage - Once again, Nokia have not changed anything with the Lumia 928. Apart from the body, we are yet to notice much of a difference here. This is the point at which we start to doubt the Lumia 928. Anyway, it has 1 GB of RAM which is still low as compared to the 2 GB RAM available on many smartphones today including the Galaxy S4. It still has 32 GB of internal storage though. Nokia still has not figured out how to provide external storage options to its users. Thank god for the internal storage.

    4. Camera - Now we come to the business end of this comparison. Nokia has opted for a Xenon flash (reminds you of the Nokia N8 right) instead of the standard Dual LED flash they are using on other Lumia phones. It really is a wonder how this is the first phone after the Nokia N8 to be released with a Xenon flash. Personally, I feel it should have been on many more of their phones. Anyway, it just makes the low light photography capabilities of the cell phone that much better. We had done a camera comparison a few days ago between the Galaxy S4, Lumia 920 and some other flagship smartphones. The Lumia 920 didn’t do too well there. With the Lumia 928, not much has changed, but there is a huge difference. The Xenon flash and Optical Image Stabilization on the Lumia 928 make it the best smartphone out there right now as far as the camera is concerned. Of course, there will always be people who feel otherwise, but if you click a few photos with the Lumia 928’s camera, you will forget everything else. Simply put, you could even call the Nokia Lumia 928 an excellent camera with additional smartphone features.

    5. OS & Performance - There is no point in going through this again. Like in everything else the Galaxy S4 easily sweeps the floor with the Lumia 928. The superior quad-core processor in the Galaxy S4 provides a much better navigation experience although there will be some that feel the Lumia 928 (even with its dual-core processor) isn’t far behind. No questions here. The Galaxy S4 wins this one hands down.

    6. Battery - Without even reading through this point, everyone will already know who’s going to win. Samsung smartphones are well known for their excellent battery life. While Nokia has managed to significantly improve its battery life with the latest Lumia phones, it still has miles to go before it can come anywhere close to the Galaxy S4. A lot more work to be done Nokia. Tsk, tsk, tsk.

    7. Price - This is a new point I have added to my comparisons thanks to one of the readers on Cell Phone Forums. It makes sense that the price of a cell phone too would influence its attractiveness to users. Well the Lumia 928 is priced miles below the Galaxy S4 but I am having a hard time deciding whether they should get the point or not. Let’s just say this point will always be given to the phone which costs less. Nothing else will be considered. Therefore, the Lumia 928 wins the point.

    Conclusion

I think it’s safe to say the Galaxy S4 still holds top position in terms of smartphones. Being a hardcore Nokia supporter, I go through each of these comparisons trying really hard to prove Nokia is finally back in the big leagues with not much success. I have high hopes for the Finnish cell phone manufacturer. Hopefully, they will come out with something miles ahead of competition soon. But till then, Samsung is safely perched at the top.
