Info: The Samsung Galaxy S4 vs The HTC One. This One Really Is A Shocker!!!

With all the hype surrounding the Samsung Galaxy S4 and its release, everyone seems to have overlooked the release of another handy little smartphone, the HTC One. While no one really expects the HTC One to do well against the Samsung Galaxy S4, there is no doubt that it is a truly remarkable phone in itself. And considering the HTC One is so much cheaper to own that the Samsung Galaxy S4, this comparison will help puts things in perspective for you. Be sure to go through the entire comparison though as there are some facts which will definitely shock you.

1. Size and weight - This is probably one of the most shocking facts I have ever read. The Samsung Galaxy S4 (with a display which is 0.3” larger than the HTC One) measures in at 136.6 x 69.8 x 7.9 mm which is lesser than the HTC one which measures in at 137.4 x 68.2 x 9.3 mm. How is it possible for a phone with a smaller length to have a larger display size? A lot of wasted space HTC, a lot of wasted space. Also, in terms of weight, the Galaxy S4 weighs 13 g lesser than the HTC One. And just like that the Galaxy S4 starts this comparison off with a point. Not that anyone doubted that.

2. Display - The display is the first point which is going to shock you. We all thought that the Galaxy S4 was on top when it comes to pixel density with its 441 ppi spread over a 5.0” inch screen. Now the shocking part, the HTC One has a 4.7” screen and provides an amazing pixel density of 468 ppi. How is it possible that HTC managed to trump Samsung here? Also, the Super AMOLED screens used on the Samsung phones are getting a little old now. The HTC One has a Super LCD 3 screen which provides a much better viewing experience than the Galaxy S4. Even though both phones have a pixel density of more than 400 ppi which provides a good enough viewing experience we feel the HTC One should be given this point. It’s absolutely brilliant how HTC has managed this.

3. Memory & Storage - Now, we return to the usual scheme of things. The Galaxy S4 offers 16, 32 and 64 GB options with expandable memory also available up to 64 GB. On the other hand, the HTC One is only offered in a 32 GB version with only 26 GB of memory available to users. I honestly haven’t been able to understand who would need 128 GB of storage space on their cell phone? Both phones run on 2 GB of RAM which means you can expect a similar performance from both of them. Keeping that in mind, even though Samsung does have additional storage options I would want to call this one a draw.

4. Camera - There really is no comparison here. Given how the Galaxy S4 has consistently proved over the last month that it has the best camera on a smartphone today there really is no hope for the HTC One. The 13 MP shooter on the Galaxy S4 has managed to beat the likes of Nokia (who are known for their excellent cell phone cameras) and Sony (who have also come out with their own 13 MP camera), how could the 4 MP camera on the HTC really put up a fight? In all fairness, both phones do have a handy 2 MP front camera which begs the question, “Is it time for HTC to tie up with an optical industry giant like Nokia did (They tied up with Carl Zeiss in 2005) did?” One point to Samsung.

5. OS & Performance - The HTC One runs on Android 4.1.2 (Jellybean) while the Samsung Galaxy S4 runs on Android’s flagship OS, Android 4.2.2 (Jellybean). This was a no brainer. Android 4.2.2 is better than Android 4.1.2 and that was expected. We do hear rumors that an update will be made available for HTC in June 2013 and if that turns out to be true, there really would be nothing to separate both these cell phones here. Considering the fact that the update will be out in June, it would only be right to call this one a tie.

6.Battery - This is one aspect that we can really have no complaints about. Both phones have huge batteries (the Galaxy S4 with a 2600 mAh battery and the HTC One with a 2300 mAh battery). You can expect countless hours of battery life on both phones even with moderate to heavy use. Getting through a day is pretty easy as well. It wouldn’t be fair to award this point to Samsung as HTC too does pretty well here.

7. Price - Put aside the fact that both phones can be purchased for under $ 200 on contract. Now, the Galaxy S4 is available for $ 698.50. The HTC One though can be purchased for $328.50. The HTC One costs less than half. Honestly, if you are willing to forego on the camera and compactness of the phone a little bit, the HTC One is essentially a cheaper Samsung Galaxy S4. I don’t think the size difference and the camera warrant a $300 + difference. Maybe $100 - $150 max. Excellent pricing by HTC gives them this point.


Conclusion

I’m sure many would already be shocked. The score is tied at 2-2. How is that even possible? How can a phone like the HTC One be tied with the ever so great Samsung Galaxy S4? When you come to think of it, the answer lies in the details. While the Galaxy S4 is easier to hold and does have a better camera, the HTC One has a better display and is cheaper. What are you looking for? Size and functionality or quality and price? It really depends and even I am shocked at how well the HTC One fared in this comparison.
