Clearing the Cache Partition:

Clearing the cache on a smartphone can solve a lot of issues, and can be a great way to fix various problems with your phone without master resetting it and losing important data. If your device is not working correctly, it crashes / freezes etc. then follow the steps below to clear its cache:

  1. Turn off your smartphone
  2. Press and hold the "Volume Up", "Home" and "Power" buttons at the same time
  3. Once the phone vibrates, release the "Power" button but keep pressing the other two
  4. As soon as the "Android System Recover" screen appears, release the "Volume Up" and "Home" buttons
  5. From the recovery menu, press "Volume Down" to navigate to and highlight "Wipe cache partition"
  6. Press "Power" to select the option. Your phone will now wipe the cache partition and it will reboot in normal mode

Factory Resetting

WARNING! Whether you reset your device through the settings menu or via hardware keys, all of your personal data stored on the internal memory will be deleted. This includes downloaded content, images, apps, custom ringtones and contacts. Remember that master resetting your smartphone will not affect the data stored on your SIM or SD Cards.

Master Resetting Through the Settings Menu:

  1. If necessary or possible, back up your data using the guide from this link
  2. From the home screen, press the "Menu" button
  3. Tap "Settings" and go to the "Accounts" tab
  4. Tap "Backup and reset"
  5. If desired, clear the check boxes associated with "Automatic restore" and "Back up my data"
  6. Tap "Factory data reset" > "Reset device"
  7. Assuming that your smartphone has screen lock enabled, you will be required to enter your PIN or password and tap "Continue"
  8. Tap "Delete all" to confirm

Master Resetting Using Hardware Keys:

If you cannot reboot your device as it freezes or crashes, and if you cannot apply a master reset through the settings menu, then you can still do it using a combination of buttons.

  1. Back up your data if necessary. To learn how to do so, visit this link
  2. With your smartphone turned off, press and hold "Volume Up", "Home" and "Power" at the same time
  3. After the phone vibrates, release the "Power" key
  4. When the "Android System Recovery" screen appears, release the "Home" and "Volume Up" buttons as well
  5. Navigate to, and highlight "wipe data / factory reset", using the volume buttons
  6. With the option highlighted, press "Power" to select it
  7. Press the "Volume down" button in order to highlight "delete all user data"
  8. Press the "Power" key to select the option
  9. After the device has been master reset, the "Reboot system now" option will be highlighted. Press "Power" once more to reboot your device in normal mode

Enabling and Using Safe Mode:

Safe mode is a great way to get rid of a third party application that might prevent you from rebooting your smartphone on normal mode, or it might cause issues with your device, preventing you from uninstalling it. Remember that in safe mode, all third party apps are disabled.

Entering Safe Mode:

  1. Turn off your smartphone
  2. Press and hold the "Power" button
  3. After the "Samsung Galaxy" splash screen appears, release the "Power" key, and immediately press and hold "Volume down" instead
  4. Keep holding the "Volume down" button until your smartphone finishes rebooting
  5. The "Safe mode" label should appear in the bottom-left corner of the screen. When you see the label, you can release all the buttons

Uninstalling a Third Party Application and Exiting Safe Mode:

  1. While on the home screen, press the "Menu" button
  2. Tap "Settings"
  3. Go to the "More" tab and select "Application manager"
  4. Swipe the screen until you reach the "Downloaded" screen
  5. Select the app that you wish to remove
  6. Tap "Uninstall" and "OK" to confirm
  7. To exit safe mode, press and hold the "Power" button and tap "Restart"
