WARNING! When you master reset your phone, all data located on the device’s internal memory will be deleted. This includes downloaded content, media files and ringtones, contacts, applications etc. In addition, all settings will be restored to factory values.

NOTE: Before master resetting your phone, you can visit this thread for instructions on how to back up data. You can also follow the instructions in this thread to restore your data.

Factory Reset via Settings:

  1. Tap “Apps” on the home screen
  2. Open “Settings”
  3. Scroll to “Personal”
  4. Tap “Backup and reset”
  5. Optionally, turn “Back up my data” and “Restore” On or Off
  6. Tap “Factory data reset”
  7. Tap “Reset device”
  8. If your phone is protected by a locks screen, enter your PIN / password etc. to proceed
  9. Tap “Continue” > “Delete all” to confirm

Factory Reset via Recovery:

NOTE: If you are unable to master reset your phone via settings using the method above, you can instead try resetting it via Android System Recovery. The Recovery menu can be accessed by performing a combination of button presses.

  1. Turn off the phone
  2. Press and hold “Volume Up” and “Home” simultaneously
  3. Next, press and hold “Power” as well
  4. When the “Samsung” logo appears, release “Power”
  5. At the “Android” logo, release “Home” and “Volume Up” too
  6. Once you gain access to the Android System Recovery menu, navigate it using “Volume down”
  7. Highlight “Wipe data / factory reset”
  8. Press “Power” to select the highlighted option
  9. Press “Volume down” and highlight “Yes – delete all user data”
  10. Press “Power” to confirm and wait for your device to reset
  11. Once done, “Reboot system now” should be highlighted
  12. Press “Power” to restart your device

Check for OS Updates:

NOTE: Once you factory reset your device, it’s recommended to verify if new software updates are available for download. To do this:

  1. Open the apps drawer
  2. Launch “Settings”
  3. Scroll to “System” and tap “About device”
  4. Verify if a new update is available, and if applicable, follow the on-screen prompts to download and install (NOTE: this process may require you to reboot your phone)
