WARNING! When you master reset your phone, all data located on the phone’s internal memory will be deleted. This includes media files, apps, downloaded content, contacts, ringtones etc. In addition, all settings will be restored to factory values.

Factory Reset via Settings:

  1. Open the apps drawer
  2. Go to “Settings”
  3. Scroll to “Personal” and tap “backup and reset”
  4. Optionally, enable “Back up my data” and “Restore”
  5. Next, tap “Factory data reset” > “Reset device”
  6. In case your device is lock screen-protected, enter your PIN / password / pattern to proceed
  7. Tap “Delete all” > “Reset device” to confirm

Factory Reset via Android System Recovery:

NOTE: If your device freezes, crashes, runs out of storage inexplicably or otherwise prevents you from resetting it via settings, alternatively you can reset the phone from the Android System Recovery menu. You can access the menu by performing a combination of button presses as follows:

  1. Ensure the phone is powered off
  2. Then, press and hold “Power”, “Volume Up” and “Home” at the same time
  3. At the “Samsung” logo, release “Power”
  4. At the “Android” screen, release “Volume Up” and “Home” too
  5. After you gain access to the Android Recovery menu, press “Volume down” repeatedly to navigate to and highlight “Wipe data / factory reset”
  6. Press “Power” to select the highlighted option
  7. Press “Volume down” to highlight “Yes – delete all user data” and press “Power” to confirm

Check for OS Updates:

NOTE: After you reset the device, it’s recommended to check if new OS updates are available for download.

  1. Open the apps drawer
  2. Go to “Settings”
  3. Scroll to “System” and tap “About device”
  4. Check if an update is available
  5. If applicable, follow the on-screen steps to download and apply any available updates (NOTE: the update process will require at least one reboot)
