No MP3 playback on the new phones with the v-cast software, or old phones flashed with v-cast. So us with the v-cast must convert to wma.

Funny how Microsoft has managed to affect my cell phone's feature list.

Put a little one in MY_SOUNDS with hopes of making a ringtone, but apparently ringtones are yet another format, not WMA.
Here's the details on making a ringtone that sounds good:

    1. Convert your MP3's to Wav files. I use Switch. Located here: http://www.download.com/Switch/3000-...-10430342.html

    2. Trim your Wav files how you like them. I use Wavepad located here: http://www.download.com/WavePad/3000...-10382895.html
You can also use Wavepad to open an MP3 and save to Wav skipping step 1.

    3. Download WSD (Wave Sound Decoder) from here http://smaf-yamaha.com/tools/downloads.html#wsd
Open up your Wav file. Change the drop down to MA-5. (Better quality then MA-2). Go to Edit then Sample Type and resample your file to 24000. Also make sure convert to mono is checked. AGain make sure you have MA-5 in the drop down if you want decent quality.

    4. Save the file to your desktop (or anywhere) as a MMF. Go and rename the file to .MID For example rename MYSONG.mmf to MYSONG.mid. Now copy the mid file to your transflash card.

There you go MP3 (kinda) ringtones. They sound pretty good too.

Thanks Adhall for the pointers on ringtones.

    If anyone wants to try some freebies i made up with the Wave Decorator program (after trimming with Cool Edit), here ya go. I have no idea what phones they might work for, but they definately work on the Samsung SCH-A950;

Unfortuanetly, this is due to a contract with Verizon and Microsoft (the V-Cast software devs)... One you use V-Cast for the first time, the phones firmware is updated, removing MP3 playback...

so I guess unless my phone carps out, I am going to be able to use
    my mp3's..

I was miffed at first about the .wma thing, but i'm (surprisingly) happy now. The .wma files bitrate can be lower for the same quality, which of course means more music on your phone.

I got the AllToWMA app -- you can convert a whole directory tree of mp3s to wmas with a few clicks of the mouse.

Why don't you just create a folder on your card called "MY_MP3S" and then put you music in there? I have a PDA (Just a PDA not a smartphone) and I have to do that all the time with my SD cards.

Read this post front to back a few times, and still a little confused and just wanted to clarify this.

All I have is my phone, Windows XP, WMP10, and a 512MB microSD card. Is this all I need to play songs on my phone from my computer? I see something about a USB cable in the manual, and don't know what they're talking about?

    Thanks in advance.

You have the new "v-cast" phone right?

You need a card reader for your computer that will accept the micro-sd (by itself or as miniSD where you insert the micro-sd into a miniSD adapter), and you need whatever software you prefer for making .wma files. Then just copy the .wma files into the MY_MUSIC folder on the card. The USB cable would work for copying files, but it is extremely slow (took maybe 5minutes for one 3.5Meg song). The USB cable is helpful, however, for extracting files from the phone (think photos taken with the phone's camera).

Yeah, I have the V-Cast phone. I have a card reader, so when my microSD card comes in the mail, I'll play with it a bit and see if I can figure it out.

A little off-topic, but is there only one USB cable, or is there a lot to choose from?

There is a Samsung cable easily found on ebay that works with BitPM. I've also seen a proprietary cable that works with another company's software (comes as a package) but i can't remember it. As far as my needs go, the Samsung cable with BitPM is satisfactory.
