Greetings all. I would like to know what the general consensus is about this phone. I have a very hard time with phones, because I *must* have a phone that is comfortable to carry in a front pants (or shorts, dress slacks, jeans, etc) pocket, because for other reasons, I cannot carry a phone attached to a belt.

The design of this phone seems perfect for that, but I am wondering about the quality of its reception because it lacks an antenna.

Also, how is mp3 on it? I have a few songs I would like to always keep handy. I don't text, and don't really care for the photos I have seen from any cell phone, so those features don't matter to me.

Any other problems or issues, or things it is good for would be great.

    Thanks

I just got this phone recently, for similar reasons (mostly the size of it).

So far so good. I have no MP3's on it, so I can't help you with that.

However, one thing that really annoys me (and it may be that I am just an idiot and can't figure it out)...but the time will not display on the front panel unless you either open the lid up, or hold down one of the outside buttons for a few seconds, but that activates either the camera or voice command as well.

Anyone know how to set it so time will be displayed either all the time, or with a simple touch of a button?

That is a battery saving feature. However, you can reactivate the front display by pressing the volume button (up or down) for a second or 2. This action will not turn on any other features.

    Re: SCH-u540 Quality and problems?

I have no issues with this phone as far as reception. I like the size and feel of it A LOT! I thought I would always want the smaller slimmer phones, but the novelty of that smaller size sure does wear off fast if you use your phone as frequently as I do.

My biggest complaint so far (I've only had this phone for about 2 weeks) is that it is so damn difficult to find any compatible ringtones other than the pay ones that Verizon offers. And the ones that came with the phone are TERRIBLE!!! I have been trying to get new tones into my phone for a week, and I have only managed to get 2!! Those came from a site called sendmemobile. The very first tone came flawlessly, (you get 20 free credits to try this site out) but I have tried each day for the past 3 days and have managed to get only 1 additional tone, but all of my credits are gone and despite 4-5 tries to get customer service to help, I get no replies from them. I got a text to tell me to text "help" and they send you a phone number to call, but when you dial the nbr, you get a recording telling you to go to the website for help. What a merry-go-round.

Other searches and ringtone websites report that the phone is incompatible (such as xingtone.com) and the main reason is because Verizon has purposely turned that feature/option off. Are they really that greedy???

I need some new tones... PLEASE tell me how to get some!!!

The easiest way to get ring tones is to create them yourself. Send the sound you want to the VZW Pix Place Web site, accessible at wwwDOTverizonwirelessDOTcom, then just sent it to your phone from the Web site. It costs one MMS message. Then just save it as a ring tone. It seems to be limited to wav files--just save them to a lower quality wav file (20,050 hz or less) and you're all set.

Regarding the phone itself, I find it to be one of the best phones for carrying in your pocket. It's slim and very light. However, if you use the Web browser or GIN apps a lot, you might find it to be a bit buggy. It power cycles (reboots) every now and then. Usually not too big a deal, but can get annoying.
