I just got a samsung muse last week. Today the usb data cable came in the mail. I have already installed a 2GB micro SD card. I plugged the phone in and began to root around. I figured out how to make the phone appear as a mass storage device and I am able to access the sd card. however I am unable to copy files to the phone's memory. the phone will only let me use ringtones that are on the phone memory.

According to samsung I have to download them from Axxess shop. Is there any other way of getting ringtones on this block of turd that's not going to cost me more money?

    thanks

Re: Alltel samsung muse (sch-u706) Difficulty getting ringtones

i found this on another board

I got it to work on the Muse. You should limit your MP3 size to about 30 seconds. That would be a 500k or so file size. The Muse has a 50mb onboard memory, so don't get carried away with too many MP3 ringtones. I made my 30 second clips from the Audigy Soundblaster Wavestudio. I just opened the MP3 with that program, clipped what I didn't want, and saved it as filename_RT.mp3.

You can't use BitPim yet. This phone isn't supported in BitPim 1.05 or 1.06-TEST. You need to download QPST, which is very similiar to Bitpim. You will also need the Samsung CDMA drivers, as well as the USB PC-to-phone cable. Follow this procedure, but use QPST instead of BitPim.

Here is a quote from the guy (defiancecp) who got it to work on an earlier model:

    Quote:

First you should record a sound in "my sounds", just to confirm the directory is correct.

Obviously you need a cable. I used a susteen one (samsung cable 3, though it's not listed as being compatible with the u520, that's just because their software doesn't support it yet) and drivers for it (mine came with the susteen kit I bought a while back).

You need bitpim. Set it for 'other phone', set your com port to whatever your driver created and turn on the file system

In the file system you'll see a "brew" folder, then "mod" folder, then "18067" folder

In that 18067 folder, there should be whatever file you recorded earlier, plus an "Msinfo.db" file.

Copy your MP3 ringtone into this folder *NOTE* - My mp3's were renamed as .mid files a while back when I had an audiovox cdm8910 that required this; I don't know if you NEED to rename them or not, but mine already were. I don't think you do, though.

Once the file is copied, reboot the phone. This MUST be done before the next step, because the phone checks for new files and creates entries in the Msinfo.db file then.

Now, save the Msinfo.db file and open it with *WORDPAD* - that's important. Notepad won't read CR's as end of line (it expects CR/LF, so all you'll see is a funky box) - and other programs may add their own characters.

You'll see each of your files listed as such:

    /ff/brew/mod/file|0|5
    /ff/brew/mod/file.mp3|0|0

The last character is the key: the '5' somehow tells the phone that it is valid as a 'my sounds' file, where the '0' does not. So, change it. Change *ONLY* that character, and only change it to a '5'; I don't know what changing other characters will do...

anyway, overwrite that file on the phone with the edited version, then the file should appear in "My Sounds", where you can set it as a ringtone

Re: Alltel samsung muse (sch-u706) Difficulty getting ringtones

Thanks for the info to get me started. Just like some, I have found that only qpst works with the Alltel Samsung Muse which I just bought last week. I followed the post by creyno (embedded post by defiancecp) and was able to get my mp3 to the phone via qpst. Use qpst with caution...

Here are the steps that worked for me after samsung cdma driver and qpst installed (a few differences from creyno and defiancecp):

    Start QPST Configuration.
    Click on the Ports tab.
Click on the Add New Port... button.
Select COM port that shows USB and something like SURF6550-ZRF6500 (NAND8).
Click on the Active Phones tab.
With Phone SURF6550-ZRK6500 highlighted, click on Start Clients on the menu bar.
Under Start Clients, select EFS Explorer.
When the Phone Selection window pops up, click OK.
This will start QPST EFS Explorer.

In QPST EFS Explorer, with the filesystem showed on the left side, expand brew folder.
    Next expand the mod folder.
    Highlight the 18067 folder.
On the right side of the explorer, right click on the mouse and select New... and then File.
The Write File to Phone window pops up.
Click Browse... to find your mp3 and then click OK.
Repeat the process of adding new files for any additional mp3.

    Reboot the phone.

Back on EFS Explorer, right click on the MsInfo.db file and select Copy From Phone...
In the Copy File From Phone pop-up, pick your destination folder and click OK.
Under Windows Explorer, make a copy of the file and then open MsInfo.db with Wordpad.

    /ff/brew/mod/file|0|7
    /ff/brew/mod/file.mp3|0|0

Instead of changing the last number from 0 for each mp3 file to 5, it's 7.
    Save the file.

Back on EFS Explorer, right click on the right side without any files selected, and click New, then File.
The Write File to Phone window pops up.
Check to make sure that the Overwrite Allowed is checked.
Click Browse... to find your MsInfo.db file and then click OK.
    Close QPST EFS Explorer.

Unplug the USB cable from the computer.
Remove the USB cable from the phone.
    Reboot the phone.

Once the phone starts back up, you will see the mp3 in Menus>Multimedia>My Sounds.

With each mp3 selected, under Options, select Set As. The choices are Ring Tone, Contact ID and Alert Tone.

I tried Ring Tone, and can't find it under My Ringtones. Selecting Contact ID does work. So essentially I am able to use the mp3 as ringtones for contacts, just not a ringtone you can select under Settings>Sound Settings>Ringer Type>Voice Calls. I have not tried setting it as Alert Tone yet.

If anybody has any success setting the mp3 as Ring Tone instead of through Contact ID, please let me know.

Re: Alltel samsung muse (sch-u706) Difficulty getting ringtones

do me a favor and look in the root of that filesystem with QPST and see if there is a file called something like: "mytonedb.db"

I will say that the method used for putting ringers on a MOTO phone is somewhat similar to this but far less complicated.

for a MOTO phone all that needs to be done is to copy the ringer to the proper folder, then go to the ROOT of the filesystem and delete the file called "mytonedb.db" then reboot the phone.

    edit:
okay.. ive read the guide further now, and it appears that you all are actually just rewriting the ringer database file manually. this may not be necessary. you could possibly be able to just delete this file and reboot the phone without having to manually edit this file. the phone should then index the files in the manner that the MOTO phones do, and mark them as valid ringers. proceed with caution if you attempt to do this method though as im not positive if it will work the same way with a sammy.

Make sure your phones PC connection is set to "no connection" before you begin.

Also if you change the last number to a 5 (instead of 7) then you can make this "my sounds" file a ringtone.

Ok, Good info! I have downloaded Qpst. Do I need to do something before going to qpst configuration? When I go to "ports" then to "add new port" everything is blank. There is nothing to highlight. What am I doing wrong?

twister make sure that you have your phone set to no connection
MENU> SETTINGS > PHONE SETTINGS > PC CONNECTION. I missed that part.

Re: Alltel samsung muse (sch-u706) Difficulty getting ringtones

I did do that. I am using the cord that came with the memory card/ear bud/cord combo, if that makes some sort of difference. When I switch my phone to "no connection" my computer doesn't recognize anything being plugged into the USB. When I click "ports", a window pops up that says: "please enter the port to be monitored by the qpst server" with a big blank box, the "port" box that is empty, and "port label" box which is empty. After downloading QPST, I went directly to QPST Configuration. Should I have done something else, or loaded something else before hand?

OK this cord that you speak of, does the end look like the charger end that you plug into the phone to recharge the battery? If you have your phone set to USB connection, do you see your card in MyComputer? If that is correct did you hit the button that shows add new port? (GPST CONFIG MAN)

Yes, the cord looks like the charger cord, with a USB on one end. I know it is making connection. I have used to to add songs and move pics around. with my phone set to "usb mass storage", I see it on "my computer". if I set it to "no connection", It does not show up at all. and when it shows up on "my computer", nothing is displayed when I click the "add new ports" button.

Now this is interesting, what is the OS that you are using? I have not used vista so I hope if you are using Vista then it is basically the same as in XP. You need to check the computers device manager. I would boot the system to safe mode because windows has a tendency to hide UNKNOWNS in the DM. Once in save mode Right Click on my computer you may have to click start then go up to my computer if you do not have the icon enabled in safe mode. On the pop up menu you should have a choice to manage choose that option then about half way down you have the option for the device manager, check for splats in the device manager, check under modems and also under the USB sections under the modem if it is there it should read alltel or samsung phone and in the usb it should also refer to one of those two companies. IF YOU DO NOT SEE SAMSUNG/ALTELL anywhere in your device manager you do not have to phone installed properly. If it does read samsung/ alltel then you have the right USB driver installed on the system. I would still remove the "hardware" from the device manager listing and reboot the system and let the system reinstall the drivers provided it you do have the correct drivers installed on the system

Samsung Muse SCH-U706 - read lots, still hesitant

    Hi:

My kid just got an SCH-U706 Samsung Muse (Alltel).

I have never done this type of ring-tone-hacking (pre-newbie). I don't think I trust myself to get the right setup for QPST. I have read several threads on a few forums, but still feel like I don't have this figured out enough to experiment with someone else's new phone...

Well, I did just try editing an MP3 file and copying it (just ordinary XP file methods) to my own phone's (LG Wave) MicroSD card in a card reader on the PC, to the same directory as a working mp3 ringtone downloaded from the Web. This file works as a ringer and as an alarm clock sound. (There must be Latent Luddite tendencies - the only ringtone I was motivated to add for myself was a recording of a mechanical brass bell ringer - the way phones sounded before they became fragile :O)

The phone wouldn't open a menu (ringers or sounds, I forget) afterward (waiting and waiting). I did remove the file by putting the microSD card back in the PC card reader & deleting if from the directory and the phone works again. My clip must have had wrong attributes I guess...or worse...

That didn't give my kid confidence in me trying anything risky like QPST, finding the right drivers, etc.

So, to undertake a less risky approach than QPST with the SamsungMuse/706, what options do I have?

    0) Wait for BitPim compatibility...if possible...

    1) What about ringtone editor software?

I am not sure I understand completely, but it looks like I have read about two methods (that may overlap and maybe aren't really two different ones) - one editor directs you to create an account on some site that you upload your files to - then from there I'm not sure - do they 'send' them to your phone number, or do you have to set up cellphone web access and retrieve them? Is this because of a technique that is required to get them to the phone the right way, or to get you to pay a subscription fee?

If 'sending' compatible ( to be defined) ringtones to the user phone number works, are they handled as text messages with attachments...or what else?
Like I said - no clue on my part-

    2) USB cable or Bluetooth Dongle at PC?

I imagine these both depend on having a working software method of adequate file transfer and control - back to the BitPim incompatibility and QPST risk issues... :O(

    3) ?

    Thanks

    Murray

If you have unlimited text messaging with your plan the way to go
is download a program called audacity. It is a sound editor that is
freeware, it is best to donate some funds to them for bringing this little
program for us to use. You will also need libmp3lame-win-3.97.zip make sure
you extract it to the audacity folder so you can save your file to an MP3 file.
You cannot exceed 300 kb for the file to txt to the phone you want to send the MP3.
When that person opens the file it will play choose options and scroll to the bottom
of the list and you can choose to save the file to mysounds and then you can apply it
    as a ringtone from there.
