Wiping the Cache Partition:

In case your phone doesn't work correctly and you're considering applying a master reset, then you might want to try and solve the issues by clearing the cache partition first. The advantage of clearing the cache is that by doing so, you will not lose personal data. Do wipe the E1's cache:

  1. Turn on your smartphone if necessary
  2. Press and hold the "Power" and "Volume Up" buttons at the same time
  3. Wait for the smartphone to vibrate once (roughly 3 seconds)
  4. Release the buttons as soon as the screen has turned off
  5. Press the "Power" button to reboot your smartphone in normal mode. The cache partition has been wiped

Master Resetting From the Settings Menu:

If clearing the cache didn't help and you want to perform a master reset, then you can do so via the settings menu by following the steps below.

WARNING: master resetting your smartphone will result in loss of personal data stored on the phone's internal storage. This includes downloaded data, images, apps, ringtones and contacts. NOTE: data stored on the SIM card and the SD card is not affected.

  1. If necessary, visit this link to learn how you can back up and restore data from the internal storage
  2. While on the home screen, tap "All apps"
  3. Go to "Settings"
  4. Swipe to "Personal" and tap "Back up & reset"
  5. Clear the check box associated with "Automatic restore"
  6. Scroll to "Personal Data" and tap "Factory data reset"
  7. Tap "Reset phone". Assuming that you have screen lock turned on, you will be required to enter your PIN or password. Do so, and tap "Continue"
  8. Tap "Erase everything" to confirm

Master Resetting Using Hardware Keys:

NOTE: master resetting the Xperia E1 via hardware keys is not possible. However, if your phone does not reboot, it freezes or it simply won't allow you to master reset it via the settings menu for whatever reason, then you can try fixing the problem by doing the following:

  1. Press and hold the "Power" and "Volume Up" buttons at the same time
  2. Continue to hold the buttons until the smartphone vibrates three times (it takes roughly 10 seconds)
  3. When the device vibrated three times, release the buttons
  4. Press the "Power" button and try rebooting your smartphone in normal mode

NOTE: If you cannot access your smartphone because you've forgotten a password, then use the guide below to reload the software

Reloading the Device's Software if a Password is Forgotten:

  1. Install the Sony PC Companion tool on your computer
  2. Open PC Companion but don't connect your smartphone yet
  3. Scroll to "Support Zone" and click "Start". NOTE: if this is the first time you use this, it may take a while for Support Zone to commence
  4. Click "Start" under "Phone / Tablet Software Update"
  5. Click "Repair my phone / tablet"
  6. Select your smartphone from the list. If your Xperia E1 is not showing, select "Another phone / tablet"
  7. Review the on-screen information, check the box and click "Next"
  8. Review the information and click "Continue"
  9. Once again, check the box and click "Next"
  10. Lastly, mark the check box and click "Continue"
  11. Wait for your computer to prepare the update
  12. If prompted, select your device from the list
  13. Follow the on-screen steps to connect your "powered off" smartphone to your computer via USB. Remember that you are required to hold the "Volume Down" button!
  14. Once the reload process begins, you can release the volume key
  15. Wait for the software to be downloaded and applied. Depending on the situation, this can take up to 30 minutes

Enabling Safe Mode:

Assuming that you've installed a third party app on your Xperia E1 that causes issues and it prevents you from uninstalling it, then you can get rid of the problem by rebooting in safe mode. NOTE: in safe mode, all third party apps are disabled

  1. Press and hold the "Power" button
  2. Tap and hold "Power off"
  3. Press "OK" to confirm you wish to enter safe mode
  4. Once the device reboots in safe mode, tap the "All apps" icon
  5. Tap "Settings"
  6. Scroll under "Device" and tap "Apps"
  7. Swipe to the "Downloaded" section
  8. Select the problematic application and tap "Uninstall"
  9. Press "OK" to confirm
  10. To exit Safe Mode: Press and hold the "Power" button, tap "Power off" and then reboot your smartphone in normal mode
