How-to: Sony Xperia X Compact: Back Up & Restore App Data, Contacts, and Media Files

Back Up Application Data:

1. Open the apps drawer
2. Launch “Settings”
3. Scroll to “Personal” and tap “Backup & reset”
4. Turn on “Back up my data” to back up application data and settings to your Google account
5. To allow app data to be restored automatically when reinstalling the apps, enable “Automatic Restore”

Back Up Contacts:

1. Open “Settings”
2. Tap “Accounts”
3. Select an account type and the account you want to use for syncing the contacts
4. Ensure “Contacts” is enabled
5. Tap “Menu” > “Sync Now”

NOTE: Contacts backed up using the method above can be restored automatically the next time you sign in with your Google backup account.

Back Up Media Files on a Windows Computer:

1. Connect the Sony Xperia X Compact to your computer via USB
2. Turn on “File Transfer (MTP)” / “Media device (MTP)” at the prompt or from the “Notification” area
3. Open the File Explorer on the computer
4. Use the Explorer to locate the media files on the phone
5. Copy the desired files and transfer them on the PC storage
6. Once the transfer is done, eject the phone storage via system tray and safely disconnect the device from the USB port

Restore Media Files from a Windows Computer:

1. Connect the Sony Xperia X Compact to your PC via USB
2. Enable “File Transfer (MTP)” / “Media device (MTP)” when prompted or from the “Notification” area
3. Open the File Explorer on the computer and locate the media file backups
4. Copy the files and transfer them on the phone storage, preferably in the “Media” folder or the directory they originate from
5. Once the transfer is complete, eject the phone storage via system tray and safely disconnect the device from the USB cord
