OK I live in a small town. when i type in my area code on the website it says they do not currently offer services in the area" but from what i understand sprint with nextel has no roaming charges so i assume that they are nationwide. Now Verizon is also nationwide and has no roaming charges and my friend who also lives in this small town without any coverage, but she got a phone through them by simply using a zip code from a town that did have coverage. Now is the same possible for Sprint? Could I get a phone and have a long distance number but only pay the $xx.xx charge for the plan I choose? I know the number would be long distance but i really need a cell phone and the local carriers don't have deals like Sprint does. Sorry if I'm not clear. Ask questions and i will try to clarify better.

Go ahead and get a Sprint phone. Explain that you don't have local coverage, but you do get roaming, and need the Fair & Flexible plan (unlimited roaming, no extra charge).
They will be glad to help you out with an area code of your choosing.

Re: Can i have a phone and not be charged roaming
I added my dad to my family plan, even though he lives in an area with no Sprint coverage. They were very reluctant to do it, since their computers told them he doesn't have service in his ZIP code, but they finally gave in because I told them he lived near a Sprint tower in a neighboring county and I had good enough reception in his house (front yard actually) to use my wireless web. My dad roams about 75% of the time because he travels a lot through rural areas covered only by Alltel, and Sprint hasn't said anything about it so far, no hidden charges or anything like that...

It may take some time, but if your dad is consistently using excessive minutes out of network, you will get an unpleasant letter or undecipherable bill, at which point your anger management skills will be tested.

Re: Can i have a phone and not be charged roaming
If you're on a Free&Clear plan, with the $5 added roaming option, and;
If you use more than 50% of your total used minutes (not total minutes in plan) roaming, then you will be charged roaming.
If you're on a Fair&Flexible plan, you will not be charged roaming. It's in the fine print. If you explain to the rep that the service requires you to be roaming, while in your home area (zip code), there should be no problem.
eg. Sprint has no coverage in most parts of Alaska. Sprint service is covered by affiliates in most areas, which means you are roaming. You will not be charged, because Sprint knows the service requires roaming.

Re: Can i have a phone and not be charged roaming
It has come to my attention that Sprint has been lying to us all about the "free roaming" by taking some of our nights & weekends roaming time out of the daytime minutes. I'm sorry if any of you were misinformed by my previous posts in this thread, but Sprint has been deceiving us all.

Re: Can i have a phone and not be charged roaming
I used 80% of my min one month roaming I am on a free and clear plan of 2000 min. I did not get charged roaming or anything. It only states they have the right to terminate your service if you use over 50%. However I hae never heard of them doing this.

I can't believe this. I roam allot and it goes by your contract with sprint. All my calls after 6 are night. The only thing that doesn't work when roaming is M2M. Unless you call someone that is a sprint user and they are roaming. For you its free them no.

The way I did it was by "clusters", each night would have a total written by it so I didnt get lost addking a hundred numbers together. After you add these numbers together and double check your math, compare it to the amount of Roaming N/W minutes listed on your bill. If the number you get is more than the number on the bill, subtract and the remainder is equal to how many daytime minutes they took from you while you were roaming.
The last bill I had like this before I made my dad give me back his phone, the difference was 254 minutes. My total daytime minutes used on that bill, incidentally, was 1752, and I pay for 1500 in my plan. Another quick subtraction shows that I should have been 2 minutes shy of going over (cutting it close!) but since all those roaming minutes were mis-billed, I had an extra $25 charge on my bill.
