I'm asking a question that has already been answered but may need updating. Can Straight Talk be used on an unlocked iPhone? The answer was no but I don't understand why, if you had a SIM card from Straight Talk and an unlocked iPhone, you couldn't make it work? Are the SIM cards different sizes or something or what exactly is the reason? Or is it that the information saying you can't do it is old and now Straight Talk does have phones that use SIM cards and you can now do it? Of course, if I could do it I would save $85+ a month and it would make an iPhone affordable for me. I just couldn't justify $130 a month but now NEED to use it as I'm in need of some business software that comes with the iPhone and connects with the computer. With the iPhone I can enter data for business (mainly expenses and contacts and hours spent) into the iPhone and sync with the computer and really simplify my life. So.....help!

Re: Using Straight Talk with iPhone?

Straight talk phones run on the Verizon CDMA network and are not compatible with AT&T's GSM network. They do not use sim cards and it will not work.

You have no option other than being held hostage by at&t at this time.

Straight talk uses both CDMA and GSM depending on which phone you buy. theoretically the sim card should work on an unlocked iphone but that has yet to be tested. look around im sure someone has attempted it somewhere

If Straight Talk is like its parent TracFone, only their phones will work.

Re: Using Straight Talk with iPhone?

It uses various GSM and CDMA wireless carriers. The TracFone phone, upon which Wal-Mart's service is based, has special firmware in the phone which displays account information. Your best source of information is to call Straight Talk and ask them whether other phones can be used. One thing to note with Straight Talk is that a refill wipes out any preexisting balance so you cannot accumulate a balance for later use.

Re: Using Straight Talk with iPhone?

    Drivingkennyb,
It has to do with which phone model you purchase from Straight Talk doesn't it.... I found some info from another cellphone thread. It was pointed out that the sim card had to be an "unlocked" sim from Straight talk which is only available in their Smart Phone 3G models, namely the Nokia E71. (Update: I was told to stay away from the Nokia 6790 Smart Phone, it does not have the unlocked sim card needed.)

So the guy I was telling you about said that these cheaper Straight Talk phones (non-smart phones) are using a proprietary "tracfone branded sim" card where as the smart phones are not. Specifically one model in particular, Nokia E71. (Update: I was told to stay away from the Nokia 6790 Smart Phone, it does not have the unlocked sim card needed.)

Am I on track? Your info is greatly appreciated....

Here is the thread where I found my info yesterday: Straight Talk GSM sim W/ iPhone

PS: Also, I noticed the Nokia E71 (one of only 2 smart phones they have) was pulled from the Straight Talk's website within the last week, I wonder if this has anything to do with the online buzz about AT&T phone's/iPhone being able to be used on Straight Talk....

(Update: The Nokia E71 is still available on many Walmart Store location shelves, you just have to check with your local Walmart. But once they're out, it does not appear that they will be offering this phone anymore.)

Re: Using Straight Talk with iPhone?

I activated my Nokia e71 and then put the SIM card in my Iphone 3g. The calling works fine and so does the text messaging but when I go to open safari it says "no data network available".

So am I at the limits of what that SIM card can do with the Iphone or is there a way to use the internet/web/data/anything???

Sharkfinsoup, I found the anwer to both of our questions, it was posted on another discussion forum. I'll cut and paste it below.

(No "Unlock or Jailbreak" is required for your iPhone to work on Straight Talk!)

I CAN tell you that I DID get everything on my iPhone working with Straight Talk and it works beautiful! (Except Visual Voicemail but I have a "fix" to get the Voicemail button on your iPhone working with Straight Talk in another post below. Plus Pic messaging requires either you download a free App or the iPhone be Jailbroken but text messaging will work fine at this point.)

The internet data behaves in every way as it does with AT&T. My friend who has an AT&T iPhone and I put ours together side by side and did a speed test and the download, upload, and ping was identical between the two!

So basically you are going to have to have your iPhone connected to a WIFI network to unlock the data/web browsing for Straight Talk service to work on your iPhone.

You will have to click on the following link from your iPhone web browser once connected to Wifi, click "straighttalk.mobileconfig", then from the web page click "Click here to download" then once downloaded, click "Install", it may show an unverified warning, ignore that. And thats it! And the web browser/data services will begin working immediately. (Your phone may require a reboot.)

I emailed a copy of the file to myself and then opened it in my Mail App on my iPhone (while connected to a Wifi network) and thats all I had to do. The web worked immediately after that.

The only Sim Card from Straight Talk that will work in an AT&T iPhone, is available in the Straight Talk model "Nokia E71" Smartphone (Retails for $199 at Walmart, but this phone has been pulled from Straight Talk's website, what's currently left on the Walmart shelf is the LAST they are offering. I called Straight Talk and verified it.). If you have ANY other Straight Talk phone with a sim card, it will not work. For some reason sim cards packaged in the E71 are generic unlocked sims for the AT&T network as evidenced by the printing on the outside of the sim card, its all black and white in generic lettering "SIM CARD". Any other Straight Talk phone sim card, is green and blue and a proprietary coded sim card from Tracfone Wireless, Straight Talk's parent co.

    Hope this helps:

Its possible to use iPhone with Straight Talk

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ok... it is possible to use the iPhone 3G with StraightTalk.

    1. Make sure the ST phone you have is GSM (sim card) (flyguy2000: "Again the only model that has a unlocked Sim Card and will work on any AT&T phone/iPhone is the Nokia E71.")
    2. Power off iPhone & Straight Talk Phone.
    3. Put Straight Talk sim card into iPhone

**Most of you may have already done this and notice that you can place and receive calls.... send and receive txts but not MMS or get internet for you apps and etc. Well Step 4 will explain how you can add a new carrier file to your iphone so you can use the full features.

Option A: Manually configure your carrier file and add the APN and etc. I won't elaborate on this option.

Option B: Download the premade file. If you chose Option B, proceed to step 4

    4. Visit the following link on your iPhone: StraightTalk.mobileconfig
    5. Click the Start Download.
    6. You will be asked if you want to install an "UNSIGNED"/"UNVERIFIED" file. Just click install.
    7. VIOLA!!! It works... You may need to reboot the iPhone. I didn't... I have full access to internet and apps can access internet.
