Cheapest way to get a Samsung D600?

My young'un is on O2 Online 50 (on a reduced tarrif). Her old samsung
slidephone is knackered. It is 19 months old. I have asked for the
D600 on an upgrade but they say her usage is low and can only offer that
phone if I pay £119.

If I cancel and sign up again it will be £19.99 and £19/month. I may do
this but only when my reduced tarrif ends in October.

In the meantime is there a cheaper way to get a D600 (preferably
unlocked to use the O2 SIM)?

Do what everyone else does by insuring and saying it was stolen. That seems
a popular route to a cheap upgrade. Just like the camera that always got
stolen on every holiday.

Thanks Mal - when you insure and then claim do you always get the same
(or better phone) ?

I suspect if I insure through O2 they would just offer the Samsung S400i
- which they have already offered me for free.

And my young'un has turned her nose up at.

John, just say that if you went to another network you could get it for
free. Just say it to them, they'll giv eyou it. If that fails, get slightly
annoyed, and say if you closed the contract and opened a new one you would
get the phone for 20 quid - either way you're getting a much better deal!

For your information, you could PAC the mobile number to a pay as you go
number on the network, then PAC it back onto a new contract with them, thus
saving you a packet. Explain to o2 you will just go to another network if
they're unwilling to budge. It works, trust me.

No, he's not in contract: "My young'un is on O2 Online 50 (on a reduced

Clearly he's out of contract as he can upgrade - but the usage is so low
that they want a sizeable amount for the handset (okay, still subsidised
though).

If he can get it free from another network, then he's perfectly entitled
to switch to that other network. Pointing out to O2 that he can do so
is far from extortion. It's their choice whether they give the deal to
him (to keep him as a customer).

What I'd call extortion, or worse, is mal's suggestion of insurance
fraud. Completely illegal and if detected
(admitting/suggesting/agreeing in a public forum isn't wise), liable to
cause untold problems getting any kind of insurance in the future.

That's correct David - I am " technically out of contract" I suppose -
but on the anniverary last October I threatened to move and the credit
my account with £100 and reduced the tarrif to £14/month. So I get 7
months free (this is the last one) and then 5 at £14. So I could cancel
next month.

So to get it free on another network i'd still end up paying £20+/month
(i'm loath to go the cashback option). O2 dont mind me cancelling and
starting again 'cos i'd instantly start paying £19/month again - they
also said I should swap to PAYG before cancelling and then I can port
the number over - they even sent me the PAC number via text (which I
hadn't requested yet).

I will call them back next month and tell them I will switch network to
get the phone and see if they offer me a better deal. Seems that they
are more willing to deal by offering reduced tariffs rather than handsets.

Yep agree with that - my understanding is that you can only get the
insurance within 14 days of getting the new phone - and it is qy=uite
pricey anyway,
