Daily 'missed' calls from +17326941545

I'm on Orange on a PAYG tarrif. Had the phone and number for yonks.
Normally I ignore these texts as they're usually scams or wrong numbers.
But this one's beginning to get on my tits. About once a day I get the
"You have a missed call" text saying that the person called but did not
leave a message. Phone on and in range, so I don't think so.

Silly I know, but I finally dialled to see what was calling. Just a few
faint beeps and whirrs. Wonder how much that cost me :-'

How does it break down? Country Code? At first I was looking at +1732 or
+173 but now I think, the country code is +1, for the US? The closest I
could get by googling was a newsgroup entry http://snipurl.com/uans
which has:

The phone number "(732) 694-1545" is a Woodbridge, NJ based phone
number and the registered carrier is Mci Worldcom Communications,
Inc., Nj.

Could that be it? Am I the only person that's getting daily spams from
these tossers?

The number looks very similar to one reported by Matt Haigh on the
Orange List. It's unlikely to be from the US, most scum cold calling
outfits prefer India to ply their trade from. Not really a lot you can
do about it sadly.

I have just called it 3 times and each time it answers to silence.

Dunno about you, but it cost me about 1p.

It gives a very faint guard tone and hangs up after about 10s.

I suspect a mis-programmed fax or card authorisation terminal.

Yes. That's a US telemarker #. 732 is a New Jersey areacode. So, those
"bone heads" are even calling overseas. A similar # is being discussed
here...

I got silence then what sounded like unobtainable, couldn't hear
anything in-between.

That's what I get too. But if you call it from the landline you get a
recorded message saying the number is out of service.

Thanks for all the responses to this. Very interesting.

I do seem to be popular. 0208 475 8756 phoned today
(Phones4somethingorother) and demonstrated their disregard for the TPS.

But another mystery. Five, yes, that's Five missed call alerts from, or,
apparantly from, 0844 484 5330, roughly one an hour. Going through one
of my occassional Give Them the Benefit of The Doubt moments I tried to
send a fax to it but no connection.

As I said I have an ancient handset with Orange on the OVP (or whatever
it's called nowadays tarrif). And (apart from Phones4suckers above),
they are all missed call alerts when the phone is in range and switched on.

When Orange first brought out the Free Missed Call Alert feature I
recall there being some disquiet about it. Now it's become a right PITA
for me. Dunno if it's a missed call scam (http://snipurl.com/ugat) but
it's annoying whatever.

The poster in http://snipurl.com/ugat refers to switching off the Missed
Call Alert feature. I'd like to do this but can't see how to do it on my
handset (6150e). Having read some of the horror stories herabouts about
how long people have been held in queues to speak to Orange Customer
Service, I thought I'd ask here first.

You can check if a missed call alert is genuine by checking the source
SMSC. On my Nokia 6310i, I did this by clicking 'Details' when viewing
the message. A genuine Orange missed call alert will come from
+447973100973 (Orange's SMSC). If you see anything else here it'll be a
junk message trying to trick you into calling them.

Of course, this doesn't help if the junk text originated from an Orange
customer, but IME this has never been the case.

However now I've upgraded to a Windows Mobile 5 device and can't see the
source SMSC, which I miss a great deal :-(

You can switch it off by calling your answerphone. Don't know the menu
option off hand though.
