Virgin Mobile UK coverage

Thinking of changing to Virgin Mobile to take advantage of a good deal but saw
the following recently:

Can anyone advise me about Virgin's coverage, or lack of it, in the UK?

Never been to many places where virgin doesn't work. You seem to forget
they use Tmobile's network. So you need to change that silly web site until
you get a class mate to alter it.
I use all networks even satellite around the UK. All drop out in various
locations.
It depends whether you have a crap phone, terrain and whether you have an
aerial on a car or not.

The T-Mobile coverage which Virgin uses is as good and as bad as any other
network. The days of One2One being the reputedly the worst for coverage are
over although I have to say that there are some odd week signal areas with
T-Mobile which don't seem to impact other providers.

T-Mobile even seem to recognise this judging by occasional local news
stories whereby residents object to the citing of a mast - I've read a
couple of stories (can't lay my hands on them) which describe a T-Mobile
spokesperson as saying that the masts are needed to provide a basic service
in terms of coverage.I guess it's the same with other networks but I, for
example, can't make a reliable call using Virgin/T-Mobile from my own home
because of weak signal but I can with Orange, O2 and Voda.

I don't think Virgin is as good value for money as it used to be but it is
still the cheapest for GPRS roaming charges and offers a decent rate for
roaming voice calls if you use direct debit pre-pay or contract.

Why not buy a pre-pay sim card for a few quid and see if it does what you
need?

I'd agree to some extent - but to say that the days of T-Mobile being the
weakest network are still far from over IME. Ok, in most of the populated
parts of the country they're generally as good as any of the other networks.
But there are still far too many silly blackspots and problematic areas
compared with the other networks. I'd go so far as to say that, although
it's a lot rarer than it used to be, it's certainly not uncommon in my
experience to find a rural or remote area where T-M is the only network not
to exist. Yes it's a lot harder to find such areas, but still a) Not
uncommon, and b) A lot easier than finding them on one of the "big 3".

Big 3? T-Mobile is the network with the largest customer base.

Two comments here...

A lot of large businesses and corporate outfits still seem to favour one
network out of Voda, O2 & Orange over T-Mobile. I have my own views on the
rights/wrongs of this approach, but that's not for here. Either way, it
suggests to me that amongst "big" users (the best word I can think of),
there is still a perception of T-Mobile being "one of the rest" when
competing on the coverage front with O, O2 or V.

These figures may have changed recently (this is an area I've stopped
following in close detail since a year or so), but T-Mobile used to:

- Have the largest customer base when they treated all the Virtual (i.e.
Virgin, Fresh, etc) networks' customers as their own,

- Be number 2 or 3 when those were stripped out.

I'm not sure how the figures stack up for Q1/Q2 2007.
