I am a proud user of Orange Romania since 1999, for a short period a pre-paid customer, than I chose a post-paid scheme. I also have a secondary mobile phone from DigiMobil, which I mainly use far calling abroad while driving, cause rates are the same as when using a landline.

Vodafone, Orange and O2 are the big providers in the UK. They also have great coverage across Europe. I would recommend a UK provider for travelers looking for European coverage simply because they speak English so you'd have no problems if you need to speak to tech support, billing, sales etc.

Orange UK have recently merged with T-Mobile UK and now hold the lions share of the market sector.

I would definitely opt for a European provider when traveling in Europe versus paying huge roaming call charges on your US cell phone. Countries in the European Union (EU) must comply with EU regulations, one of which is a cap on roaming charges therefore you can be assured you'll not pay overtly high prices.

T-Mobile are owned by Deutsche Telekom
O2 are owned by Telefonica of Spain
