BTW I see the bottom is falling out on EeePC and your N800 as real
laptop prices have begun falling like a rock this last weekend. Look
for some to drop below $200 and possibly $100 in the future. Best Buy
has the Inspire for $349 with XP and that is full retail. Linux is
cheaper yet. Look for below $300 on Amazon in a few days. Who wants
junk when you can have a quality laptop for the same price?

Apple is going to greatly cut the price on all their new Macs soon.

Now for the vast majority of students like these a laptop is too big
to carry around when all they want to do is use the iPod, camera,
    phone, INTERNET, and check email.

I don't even think your N800 would fit.

    Er, ah, Vic....

Try to FIND a new N800 to buy. Nokia discontinued production and the
shelves have been cleaned quite thoroughly across the net. They're really
    getting scarce, now.

    http://www.buy.com/retail/usersearch...e=home&qu=n800
    &qxt=home&display=col
Not even listed any more on Buy.com where I got mine....

    http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_e?...tronics&field-
    keywords=Nokia+N800&x=0&y=0
    "Currently unavailable" on Amazon...

    Go here:
    http://www.nseries.com/products/n800/#l=shop
Click on United States and notice N800 isn't on the list, even though they
still advertise it on the Nseries website. It's all N810, now, but I'd
rather have the N800 with better speakers and TWO SDHC memory cards than
one microSD card. I don't like the N810.

Would you consider a $100 laptop an iPhone Killer since it offers more
functionality at a third the price?

It's a different market entirely, just as webtablets like the N8x0s or
    UMPCs like the EEE are.

The EEE created the market for these products. I suspect we'll see the
prices of the EEE drop shortly. Isn't competition wonderful? (Oops, I
forgot! You're a Mac user- you might not be famliar with the concept of
    "competition...")

I have an EEE PC, and two "real" laptops. Guess which one comes along on
family trips? The EEE. It handles most tasks well, takes up only a
quarter of the room of a "real" laptop, and can remote into my desktop at
home if a more powerful PC (or access to my stored documents) is needed.

When traveling without the family, all the laptops stay home- my WinMo-
based Tilt phone is all I carry.

If I didn't have an EEE aready, I'd probabl be looking hard at the Aspire,
but it'd still be a close call- the EEE has better battery life due to the
solid state drive- the Aspire barely hits 2 hours on a charge, where my EEE
runs over three hours (four with the WiFi turned off, like when playing
videos on an airplane. My Tilt can't do that!)

From grossly overpriced to just overpriced? Going mainstream's a *****,
    isn't it? ;-)

And yet an iPhone is inadequate for taking notes in a classroom, so
something like an UMPC is a better solution than either a smartphone or a
    full laptop for many students.

I'm sure there are plenty of things I'd like to see that gal do, but
suggesting what technology items I should use probably isn't one of them...
