Using Motorola v400 as modem

Hi guys.
I just got a Motorola v400 phone and I'm wondering what I will need to
do to be able to connect to the internet using the cell phone as a
dial-up modem if this is possible.
I want to be able to use the laptop to check e-mail and surf a few
websites every once in a while when I'm not able to use a phone line.
What kind of data rates can I expect and how does the service work?
If I use the phone as a modem will I get charged minutes as if I were
using the phone using voice?
What I mean is while I'm using the modem portion will the minutes get
subtracted from my normal minute plan?
I'm in West Palm Beach FL to give the market I'm in.
Also how will my experience using gsm differ over tdma?
The last phone I has was a Nokia 5165.

Cingular offers a "data connect" kit for most of their phones- driver
software and a laptop-to-phone cable.

Depends- there are two kinds of data connections available- CSD,
(Circuit Switch Data, also sometimes called "GSM Data") that dials to
your own ISP at 9.6k (yep, 9.6k!) and uses your voice plan minutes,
and GPRS, that gives you about 40k, but charges you by the megabyte
(like with voice, you buy data packages and pay for overages.
Packages, IIRC, run $7/month for 1MB, up to $80 for unlimited.)

With CSD, yes. Free N&W are your friend... ;-)

9.6k CSD is available from either, but GPRS is only available on GPRS.

True, but you can probably get a cable more cheaply on eBay, and the software
is just a convenience -- even a generic Windows modem driver will work well.

CSD subtracts from minutes.
GPRS is charged by the amount of data.

Hey guys-

Can anyone tell me how to set this up? I also have a v400 and purchased the data cable as well as the Motorola PhoneTools v.2 software. I want to use CSD (GSM-Data) because GPRS requires a monthly subscription starting at $19.99/month from Cingular and I'm really not going to use this that much. I went through and set up a GSM-Data connection giving it the phone number, username, and password. When I click 'Connect' I can see on my phone the number being dialed, however it immediately disconnects. The phone number/username/password are good -- it works fine when I connect from my laptop's modem to a standard land-line using the same info.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Cingular has cheaper GPRS plans for light usage.

So I FINALLY got it working using Ryan's method. I was pleasantly suprised to see it was using the GPRS connection and I was getting decent speeds.

Question: am I getting billed for anything using this method? Is it for minutes? Data? I have their $7.99/month data package for WAP that only limits me to 1MB of transfer per month which can go pretty quickly when downloading full web pages. And I'd hate to have my next bill be huge because I was having all of this fun!!

It is billed the same as your WAP usage... So $.01 per k unless you have
a data package...

Do me a favor and do a speed test at dslreports and let us know your
speeds. I'm getting ~30k down ~20k up.

Thanks, Ryan. Do you know exactly how much data they use for the speed tests? Not to be stingy but if it's $10 for each MB... I looked but couldn't see exactly how much data is downloaded/uploaded.

The "***3" part means use the 3rd GPRS profile (CID). Change the number to
use a different profile, or omit that part altogether if you want to use the
1st profile or only have one profile.
