A co-worker bought his wife a pink razr for mother's day and got her old
silver razr. He is on an older AT&T plan and thought he would be able to
just put his sim card in the razr and be good to go. He cannot. He needs the
unlock code for the razr and everyone wants to charge $20 for it. He could
of course get a new cincular sim but he woudl lose his $10 a month AT&T plan
because it is no longer offered. I realize that is not a lot of money but
thought I would see if anyone would give it to me in this newsgroup. If so
thanks.

There is no way to 'give it to you'. Each and every phone has a unique unlock
code based on the phone's IMEI.

OK, so the obvious next question is this:
What is the algorithm for generating an unlock key from a phone's IMEI?
If you'll share that, I'll write a simple Java app that generates it and
will distribute it freely.

For the effort involved I would recommend paying the $20. The other option
is to talk to the service provider the phone is locked to and see if they
will give you the unlock code. If the contract has expired, or been moved to
the other phone, they may be happy to help, if a little slow.

Anyone who has managed to figure this out (I assume by reverse engineering) isn't telling.
They're used the info to write their own code generators so they can sell the unlock
service.
