Would like to hear from those who have had their phone fail prior to the end
of their contract, and had to renew the contract in order to continue their

That is news to me. I was so eager to get a better cell phone that I
jumped the gun. Most posts I have seen were regarding automatic
    renewals without their consent.

"Had to?" You don't have to renew anything- you could have your phone
repaired (at your expense), or buy a new, used, or refurbished phone
    (again at your expense).

You would have to renew to get a replacement at no/low cost unless you
were paying for phone replacement insurance.

To be fair, however, I think any company, like Cingular, who uses two-year
contracts as an option should disclose on the contract if the equipment has
a shorter warranty than the contract length. (Heck, if anything, such a
disclosure would probably sell more insurance for them!)

Sometimes, I have heard, that if your are not close to the end of your
contract, and you call and say you have to cancel your contract because
your phone doesn't work and if you have to pay a lot of money you'd
rather buy out your contract than a new phone, they may have some
back-up tactics to try to keep you as a customer. Preferred Nation plan
is very good. I've been living in North Dakota (nearest Cingular store
is near Chicago, from here) and I get home signal. It's great if you
travel a lot. I'm debating whether or not to try the national GAIT plan.

I just did this with no problem I've been a Cingular customer since
2000 and called and said, "my phone is driving me nuts, can I swap it
before my contract is up?" The lady put me on hold, came back and
    said, "sure, no problem".
Unfortunately I swapped my Nokia 3395 for a Sony Ericcson T616 that
    has
ZERO reception. The Cingular store near me has been *incredible* about
letting us (both my husband and I swapped phones) try different
    phones.

They don't have great coverage, but I'm really happy with Cingular's
    customer service.

Funny (scary) note: I have had not one but TWO different Cingular CS
people tell me that Hawaii is another country (when asking about
roaming charges I incurred while in Hawaii.)
