What if I get a new phone? (Cingular Nation 250 plan)

I have the old Cingular Nation 250 plan--true nationwide TDMA+AMPS
service.

I'm sick of my phone and wouldn't mind the smaller lighter 6340i.

I am considering going in and signing a year extended contract and
getting a GAIT phone, and just paying the $50 or whatever the premium
is for 1yr vs 2yr contract.

Now, the Cingular dealer (via phone) said it'd be no problem to remain
on my existing plan, and that with the new phone, I'd magically get
the benefits of GSM's better voice quality and power consumption on
the networks where GSM is already available (i.e. most of my area).

My question is ... does this make sense, or is it BS? My primary
concern is screwing up my plan--I quite like my Cingular Nation 250
plan that I have, and really don't want to go GSM only. My secondary
geek curiosity is how/whether Cingular's network "learns" that my
existing account/plan has a phone that can talk GSM to an available
tower. Or is it just a function of a GSM-capable phone having the ESN
associated with my account, and it just does GSM if it can?

No problems...I did & kept the 250/3500 plan!!

Me too! When the 6340i came out, in order to get the phone for free &
enjoy the wonders of GSM I had to renew for 2 years. Under the Spring
2002 Nation 250 plan I was happy to!

Since then I've been collecting "last years supermodel" GSM phones on
ebay rather cheaply and just swapping out the SIM card to use whatever
phone looks good to use on a given day. For travel I use the trusty
6340i which [so far] has worked flawlessly in various/numerous parts
of the great experiment in democracy known as the USA.

I too have that plan and switched to a 6340i in March 2003. I too was
worried about keeping my plan and therefore did the 2 year contract thing
hoping that I could keep the plan at least 2 more years. No problem so far.
