I had not seen this before this week, but while in NW Vermont my phone
(6340i) indicated "Private System" rather than "Cingular" or "Cingular
Extend". I presume it was an analog system, since the battery went down
    real fast.

I have one of the older "Digital Edge" national plans, so I would
presume that calls made from this area are covered (I hope!).

    Re: Private system?

If you had your 6340i in field test mode you could have been sure it
was analog. Even in AMPS, the 6340i battery doesn't go down all that
fast. As to 'Digital Edge' plans, Cingular never offered a plan like
that in MI and I wouldn't know any of the coverage for that plan. It
sounds like it is pre-Cingular when the original wireless carrier
first transitioned from analog to digital (TDMA?). On my 6340i, my
alpha tag shows most of the GSM providers (ATTWS,
    VoiceStream[T-Mobile], Einstein PCS, Iowa Wireless,
    Microcell[Canadian], USA 360,390, 450[US Cellular], etc.) and I think
I saw 'Private' about 6 months ago, but not in New England.
