I'm after something to keep track of "occasional" information, things
like birthdays and whatever, which will then feed into the diary, but
also be available to view separately. I could use Outlook, but I'd like
to be able to input via the phone ...
Similarly, are there any decent alternative contact managers? I'm using
Handy Day which seems like a good all-in-one summariser, but the contact
manager is bugging me a little ...

Have you looked at Projekt ? With this outliner app you can set up
(hierarchical) lists and link each item to a Contact / Todo / Calendar entry. It
might be an answer to both of your questions... You can find it here:
