YO YO!
I've noticed a few people saying that the Carphone Warehouse and The Link
do firmware upgrades (or at least take them away for repair!). Typically
how long do you have to wait for them to carry out a firmware upgrade?
I contacted Ericsson a few weeks ago regarding where I can get my phone
upgraded locally, and their only recommendation was a large phone repair
specialist who (judging by their website) don't really deal with personal
callers and are a bit out of the way..
So, if I popped into my local "The Link" with my newly purchased R520m and
a reciept from some ker-azy internet stockist, will they upgrade it for
me, or will the staff spit in my face and then proceed to jam a red hot
poker into a voodoo doll of me?

rich, have you got your new copper r520m then?
Anyone know of any dealers in South Yorkshire that can upgrade the
firmware on ericssons, particulary around the Sheffield area?

You can't be that far away from me then eggster2k. I believe CPW in
Meadowhall can upgrade the firmware (just hope their service staff are a bit
more knowledgable than the slaes staff).

Yup, £59 quid including delivery from uksimfree.com (who are, according to
the receipt and packaging extele.com - but they're cheaper since they
don't charge postage)
It is sexy. Although I forgot how much I had customised my old phone.
Swapping phone books between the old/new R520m phones was an absolute joy
using the phone book export function in the Ericsson software.

I drove to SHEFFIELD (specifically MEADOWHELL) once. It was cool. I went
through BUXTON and saw THE WINKING MAN. I also drove along some
absolutely bonkers roads which had ker-azee signs showing steep hills and
"LOW GEAR NOW!!!". It was a pleasurable drive, it's just a shame that
Meadowhell made me want to cry.

I'm in Barnsley. I'll give them a call tomorrow, also I'll give the
penistone road repair centre branch a call too. Hopefully they can do
the upgrade for free, expansys (where I got my r520m from a few days
back) say the phone has got 1 years manufacturer warranty so fingers
crossed.

Lucky get! I paid £72.82 inc p&p from expansys for the nice streaking
silver model but they're worth it!

Richard, I've just been looking on your site @ thephonelocker.co.uk
and notice you can do firmware upgrades. Could you do my R520?

rich, i've got a few quick questions for you if you don't mind:
What Operating System and connection to the phone do you use?
What sync/connection software do you use from the download page on the
SE website? ( If you are using software from the web site that is.)
What firmware version have you got on your new r520?
Thanks,
Chris

Umm, I used the sync software from the website for non-Outlook users.
This lets you edit phone setting using the data cable, and set up your
phonebook/send SMS.
However, for SMS sending I tend to use the excellent Float's Mobile
Agent: http://fma.xinium.com/ - this has several advantages over the
official software, it has a few interesting statistics graphs (such as
battery life/temperatures) and it lets you send long and Flash SMS
messages.
> What firmware version have you got on your new r520?
R2K. I've used R2K for ages with no problems, but I quite fancy
upgrading to R4A - just for the hell of it :P The most anticipated
feature of R4A, for me, is that when reading an SMS message it
apparently displays the contacts name rather than a raw phone number.

We can, but your phone is under warranty. If we upgrade the firmware that
will invalidate any remaining warranty on the handset. As your phone is
only a few days old, I really would stick with the official route.

I too use XP and I will be using irda or bluetooth. There are quite a
few DRS-11 cables on eBay so i might get one of those if the price is
right.

R2K sounds quite stable then, as the old saying goes though 'if it
aint broke dont fix it'!

Hello
I just upgraded my SE Z600 to R5B001.
But the store where I normally buy electro-gadgets do not have capability to
upgrade it. So I was sent to a neighbooring store wich did.
I had to show my receipt from the other store.
(beeing harased for 5 min, because of my choice in stores ;-) )
30 min later I had an upgraded Z600 with NO loss in data (eg. contacts,
calendar etc...)
though I reside in Norway I know that stores all over Europe have the same
deal with SE

Just in-case anyone's following this thread...
Well I actually work just a couple of miles away from the place Sony
Ericsson recommended to get my phone software upgraded, so I popped
there at lunch. The place I went to was the Mobile Phone Repair Centre,
a place owned by Mr. Caudwell, the owner of the hideously named Phones4U
chain of stores here in the UK who likes to blow his own trumpet so much
that he named a charity after himself - he used to be a used cars
salesman, you know. Predictably the place was on a god-awful industrial
estate in Newcastle-under-Lyme, which was really bad to drive around
since they underestimated the need for car parks when they built it and
there were cars parked just about everywhere.
Hmm..
So I went up to the woman at the counter and shouted "UPGRADE ME!!!!"
She asked to look at my proof of purchase, so I shoved a printed e-mail
invoice from uksimfree.com and a credit card reciept in her general
direction. "Oh, there's no IMEI number on the reciept. You need an
IMEI number", she shouted at me. She acknowledged that I had obviously
bought the phone in the last few days, but said she couldn't upgrade me
under warranty. HOW F'ING RUDE.
In the end I trudged back to work with an un-upgraded phone. Boo.
Anyhow, it turns out that the speakerphone is fuxx0red on my new R520m
and keeps deactivating itself, whereas it's always worked fine on my
other R520m with the exact same software, so it looks like it's going
back to uksimfree/extele. Here's hoping my third R520m is great :-)
