ringtone sample rates etc

OK sos i've got it figured out how to get midi sounds onto the phone
and appear as available as ringtones. Trouble is so far they all
sound crap. What is the best sample rate and other settings for a
useable ringtone?

There are no user-definable sample rates involved in MIDI ringtones (or
any MIDI for that matter). The MIDI file just tells the phone what notes to
play on which instruments (those of you who know a bit about MIDI will have
to excuse my oversimplification here...). How those instruments sound is
defined by the phone.

Think of MIDI as being like electronic sheet music that your phone can
read. Give the same MIDI file to another phone, or another MIDI player and
it will sound different.

Having said this, there is a great variety in MIDI files. A well
programmed one will sound much better on your phone than a poorly made file,
or one that is optimised for a different MIDI device. Unless you are
prepared to spend a significant amount of time learning how to create your
own MIDI files, I'm afraid it will be mostly trial and error if you want to
find MIDI files that sound good as ringtones. I suppose files written
specifically for your specific make/model of phone should sound better, but
I have never tried/bought any so someone else will have to comment on
that...
