I have a Palm Tungsten T3, a Sony Ericsson T610 and am on the Virgin
mobile network in the UK. Virgin introduced GPRS (though they called it
"FastWAP") at the start of July.
I've been trying to get the Palm to get to the web using bluetooth to
connect to the phone (this has been done in the past via Orange using
friends phones). Currently I've got it so it connects successfully and
the phone does connect to something (a little circle/world symbol
appears on the phone display) but when I try to use the web browser on
the Palm it gives me a DNS timout :-(
Does anyone know if what I'm trying is possible with Virgin or can it
only be used for WAP and am I wasting my time?
The current settings for my machines is as follows:
Palm connection details:
Connect to: Phone
Via: Bluetooth
Device: <my phone name>
Model: Sony-E T610
Palm network details:
Name: user
Password: <none>
Phone number: *99#
Connection type: PPP
Idle time-out: Never
Query DNS: Yes
Automatic IP address
Phone details:
APN: goto.virginmobile.uk
user id: user
Password: <none>
IP address: 193.30.166.3
DNS address: ????
When I connect and look at the log on the palm it gives this:
Local IP address: 10.192.142.132
Gateway address: 10.192.142.133
DNS addresses: 207.70.127.127
207.70.127.128
The question is why can't it do the DNS lookup? Is the problem that I
haven't filled in the DNS address field on the phone, if so then what do
I fill in? I've tried 207.70.127.127 and the IP of DNS server for NTL
DNS server but neither worked.
Anyone got any ideas, or should I just go out and get an Orange SIM?

I went through the same process as you (using a T68i rather than a T610 though).
After a lot of fiddling and discussions with a friend who works for VM, it turns
out that all the ports are blocked except those used for WAP or MMS, so there's
no way to use it for any sort of web browsing or email. This is apparently done
on the T-mobile side and I'm not sure of how much control Virgin have over this
part of their relationship.
My friend's promised to let me know when the situation changes, but until the
GPRS on Virgin is useless to me, and, I expect, to you.
Sorry :/
Glenn.

Well, I got Virgin GPRS working on my laptop, using a nokia.
The only other thing I had to do was set a proxy in my browser. ie
on internet explorer tools, connection, settings use proxy server
193.30.166.4 port 8080. Don't know if this applies to Palms.
This enabled browsing, but still couldn't use my mail program.
The only other bonus was that this was on 6th July and I still haven't
been billed for it.

Rats. I suspected as much, but thanks for the confirmation. Time to
start putting some pressure on Virgin I think.
What annoys me is that they told me for months that there was no need to
change networks as they were about to get GPRS! Grr...

Thanks for the hint!
Doing that changed the error, instead of a DNS time-out it *once* gave
me my home web page and google (but it is possible they were cached from
previous sessions on Orange phones) but now it only takes me a T-Mobile
error page wherever I go:
http://62.189.29.181/rtdb/syserr1.html
Which I definitely hadn't been to before (and it included the graphics)
so it means that the connection is definitely working. Interestingly
enough it's an IP address so wouldn't need DNS, though accessing other
web sites via their IP addresses still doesn't work :-(
The default proxy on the palm was this:
webpro.palm.com
Port: 8827
Which, if I change back to it, goes back to giving me the DNS time-out
errors.
Does anyone know why changing the proxy should change between the
T-Mobile error page and DNS errors?
I suspect that the Palm proxy is doing some munging to convert the page
to something the Palm can display, that means it may not be possible to
reliably use another proxy. Does anyone know if that is true?
Out of curiosity, what DNS does the Palm use for people on the Orange
network? That's can be got by connection to the net then doing:
Prefs -> Network -> (menu) -> Options -> View Log
