Possibly a useful application BUT.... What happens if the phone is turned
off or has no signal from the network ? The network's voicemail is going
to kick in instead.

Would only apply in a few cases, but if you roam (particularly overseas) it
would be cheaper to get all calls diverted to voice mail, than accept them
on your 'phone with a recorded message.

OK so you don't turn it off, but the phone can still go out of range 'No
service'.

Your problem, not mine.

In many situations, redirecting calls to voicemail while overseas gets
you double charged - the call goes over an international line to the
cell tower you're registered with, and then when you bounce it, it
returns. You get charged for each leg...
Not all providers do that, but it's apparently common. So it could be
cheaper to run your own answering machine.
Now, given that this came to alt.cellular.ericsson, I should mention
that none of the answering machine apps for Symbian work on any
Ericsson phones. The R380 does not, AFAIK, allow you to install
software. The P800/P900 do not let Symbian access the audio stream.
SonyEricsson says this officially to developers who ask. You'll need a
Nokia phone to do that.

In Australia (I am on Telstra) if diverted to Voice Mail, the call is first
assessed by the Tel$tra computer, and if diverted is held on their computer
or whatever, they send me a text message.
I can then chose to ring or not my voice mail number; of course I ring it;
curiosity gets the better of me!

best to do a 21 (unconditional) diversion

That's correct only if the call is being diverted after :
1-Not answering it
2-Out of coverage
As the call as to go to the roaming network first.
If you select to forward *all* calls to your voicemail, then the fee
you're referring to doesn't apply.
