Do not buy the Z500a phone! Why? Because of serious software and
mechanical problems. The phone freezes and locks up when the phone is
in silent mode. I exchanged the phone for another z500a and it had the
exact same problem! The only way to unfreeze it is to remove the
battery. Sony Ericsson said it was a software problem that they were
aware of.
Here's another problem with the phone. The exterior screen and camera
gathers dust inside the faceplate. I had to clean it out on a daily
basis. Had the same problem with both of the phones I owned.
Yet another problem. When you close the phone, the internal screen
remains on for 15 seconds or so. What a waste of batteries! In
conclusion, the z500a is a cheap, peice of junk. You get what you pay
for. I'm not ripping on Sony Ericsson. I think they make the best
phones. But the Z500a must be the worst they've made in the past few
years.

My wife's phone has the dust inside the faceplate problem. Could you please
tell how you cleaned it out? I don't want to break the front panel.

Re: DONT BUY Z500A !!!!
you push down on the faceplate with your palm and slide it off (slide
towards the bottom of the phone). Good luck.

It was a cingular phone. According to the code inside the phone it was
manufactured in week 03 of 2005.

I ended up going back to a dealer for faceplate removal. He couldn't do
it. Even tried a new phone. Then he called two other friends who were
dealers. The said the same things routman advised. No luck again.
So my dealer took out his tool kit and pried with great difficulty. I would
have been nervous
doing that myself. He finally got it off.
No doubt it is a very poor physical design.
My wife and daughter's cellphones both went dead within the last 2 days,
they
had to remove the battery. The wife's took hours for the electrolytic caps
to
drain so the lockup to clear.

It took me a few tries to get the faceplate off the first time, but once I
was able to do it, I have never had a problem doing it again.

I have had my Z500a over a month with no problems whatsover. Well, actually my only problems are learning all the features. I chose this phone w/o any forethought as it seemed to be the best of the available "free" choices. You see, after more than 4 years with my super-dependable, super-rugged, and super-simple little Nokia she finally gave up the ghost. Actually, after all the abuse she took she probably did not have the strength to recover from her 1st encounter with H2O. I took her in and wanted a replacement but the model was no longer made. Plus they told me I was eligible for a "free upgrade". Upgrade was right. For me the z500a is like going from a calculator to a computer. There's so much to learn.
Anyways, when I learned about the downloading feature I immediately got me a DSS-25 SynchStation and began replacing the stupid sony stuff with my own stuff. When my Lady calls her picture displays and "our song" is the ringtone. When my youngest daughter calls a classic line from a Daffy Duck cartoon plays with a picture of her on the screen.
Technology ... isn't it great?!!

I agree with what you've all been saying about the z500a. I have a lot of reception problems with mine. The salesman (never believe them) said that internal antennas are great. Thats BS, I'm sticking with externals made by motorola. With internals I go into a building and the signal goes to crap. The external motorola's have no problems. The camera and video work great on the phone but with all the software it makes it slow down when you push the buttons. I'll never buy Sony Ericsson again!! -Craig

I'll never buy anything BUT SE!!!
P910 - best reception I've ever had and it's an internal antenna
SE car kits just need a new cradle when you change your phone - very
handy!!
Best Bluetooth implementation I've seen

Re: DONT BUY Z500A !!!!
We have had two Z500a's for about three months now and have had no problems.
We have no inclination to change.

Wife and I each have this phone, and I have the exact same problem.
Regarding the freezing, holding the off button for about 15 seconds
will power it off, then power on again and it's fine. But if you don't
catch it when it happens, you're missing calls, and worse, while
frozen, the screen is illuminated, and a freshly charged battery will
go dead quick. Cingular suggested I switch sim cards with my wifes
phone and use hers to determine if it was the sim card. I did that,
and had the problem with her phone (my sim card). So I got a new sim
card. Still have the same problem. Funny thing though - she never has
the problem. It's like maybe it has something to do with how I'm
handling the phone, but I can't figure out what. It happens about 3 or
4 times a week.
And the dust under the cover - same thing. Weird. Haven't got it open
yet - afraid it will break.
