I wonder if you can help me.

I have just had a Sony Ericsson V800 phone and wonder if you can help me
    with a couple of queries.

    1. If I have an persons number & picture stored in the address book, when
they ring is it possible to get their picture to appear on the external
screen when the phone is closed? If so how do I do this?

    2. If I download a sound file to my phone, is it possible to play this sound
when I receive a text message rather than playing one of the sounds that are
built into the phone? If so how?

Is there anything I need to know about this phone or is there anything you
think might be useful to me concerning this phone?

I appreciate any help or information received.

    Thanks!

yes, you can edit contacts stored in the internal 'phonebook and assign midi
or mp3 tones (subject to clearing the Digital Rights Management copy
    protection.

we don't think this is possible - you're stuck with the 8 in-built message
tones - which is a pity as I have some good Star Trek wav's that I used to
    use on my Panasonic phones...

you can't just download tunes. the handset is locked so that you can only
obtain some content - ie music, from the Vodfone live service. try
downloading some tunes either by beaming or down the cable and see what
    happens - you'll find there's a key symbol saying they're locked.

Go to the sony ericsson website and download the Digital Rights package.
This lets you assign rights to your non-vodafone mp3's. Handbook says you
can play wav's too, but I can't make them work without converting to mp3
    first.
midi files make really good ringers - loads available online.

There are extra pdf manuals on the website too. very useful.

    all the best DavyPaul

The picture is never shown on the external display, only on the
internal. AFAIK, this cannot be set up in any way.

You can only set the built in (=uninteresting) tones for Short messages.
The Calendar reminder tone is unchangeable, too.
    - Although there are some services (like davinciteam.com) that allow you
to upload your own (only MIDI) Message tones, I have not dared try it on
my V800. I don't know if this phone is supported with this service...

For me these Programs and tools are very useful:
    - SonyEricsson DRM Packager (so you can set your own MP3s as ringtones):
http://sethxp.com/ (SE has removed the original link on their dev-page)
    - K700 little helper (backup/restore phonebook and calendar):
    http://k700.hitziger.net/index.php?i...ds&language=en
    - K700 Dateimanager (File Manager):
    http://k700.hitziger.net/index.php?i...ds&language=en
    - K700 Birthday Manager (create recurring calendar entries):
    http://k700.hitziger.net/index.php?i...ds&language=en
    - Audacity (Free Audio editor, I use it to create my MP3 Ringtones for
the phone. - needs the LAME Encoder to export MP3s (Link on page):

Although the phone has a very limited standby- / talktime, I am still
very happy with it. Especially the large screen and "normal - sized"
keys (hey, I don't need a toothpick to dial a number!) are perfect for
    my needs...
