According to the sonyericsson website, my f500i supports the following
    networks
    gsm 900
    gsm 1800
    gsm 1900

does this mean that its triband. I know it looks kinda obvious but I need to
    be sure.
    thanks

Tri-band = 3 bands. They usually show up as:

    GSM900 (rest of the world)
GSM1800 (again, rest of the world)
    GSM1900 (Generally North America)

    or

    GSM850 (Generally North America)
    GSM1800 (rest of the world)
    GSM1900 (again, Generally North America)

Since Cingular operates on GSM850/1900, the tri-band phones that are
offered through them tend to be the latter.

However, if you purchase a tri-band phone overseas (HK, Singapore, etc),
it's usually going to be the former since 900/1800 is used pretty much
everywhere else in the GSM world except for North America (and
    Thailand??).

There are some phones (like recent Moto offerings and my O2 XDA2) that
are quad-band. Makes sense. Wonder why SE dun do that instead of having
two lines of phones. If they off quadband instead of tri-band, they can
    standardise their world phone lineup.

    Hope this dissertation is helpful...
