I've had my second hand p910i for a couple of days now and overall I am very
impressed.
When I first got the phone I did a master reset on it, then installed the PC
suite on my desktop and plugged in the dss-20 sync stand. All went well and
the stand installed fine. Put the phone in the stand and got the recognised
new phone stuff come up. Within a few minutes I was happily transferring
contacts and files and installing software from the apps CD onto my phone.
All this worked fine for about 24 hours.
The sync stand has now stopped working completely. As far as I am aware I
have not changed any settings whatsoever and no newly installed software or
hardware. The PC still recognises the stand fine and has assigned a com port
to it. However nothing happens when I put the phone in the stand. USB is
ticked in the link properties window and shows connecting, but it never gets
any further than that.
(although for some reason after putting the phone in the stand for the first
time after connecting it to the PC it will only change to Connecting after I
lift it out and put it back again i.e. the second time I put it in)
.. I have tried the following in various combinations and orders.
.. Uninstalling and reinstalling software and drivers from the pc including
manually deleting files and installing the latest versions from the SE
website.
.. Playing with the com port settings on the phone and in device manager.
.. Changing the Com port number
.. Doing another master reset on the phone.
.. Disabling my firewall during and after install and connection
.. Using a different USB port ( didn't really think it was that anyway as the
light on the stand comes on when the phone is put in)
.. Swearing at it
None have worked.
Can anybody suggest anything that will stop me loosing anymore hair?!!
I would mind so much if it weren't for that fact that it HAS been working
but has suddenly just stopped.
I'm on Windows XP SP2

Welcome to the living hell that is SE's sync software ;-)
I've had this problem too - in my case (and may not necessarily apply to
you) it was the fact that I was attempting to connect through a USB-hub
instead of direct to the hardwired USB-sockets on the motherboard. It had
always worked fine, then it suddenly quit for no apparent reason. I think it
was a post on esato where a dude replied with the hub-problem; it has
something to do with an update to windows apparently.
Anyway.
I solved the prob by uninstalling all SE software, manually checking that
all the directories in \Program Files were gone then running a registry
cleaner (MS' regclean is *not* good enough for this, try JV16 power tools,
for example).
Reinstall the sync software, then the sync-station drivers. Plug the dss20
in (not via a USB hub, remember), check your firewall is set to allow free
access to mrouterruntime.exe and you should be OK.
There's no need to go master-resetting your phone; this is highly unlikely
to be the root of the problem.
The other (and, in the end, more satisfactory) solution is to buy a USB
cardreader and stuff your MS in there; it's quicker too :-)
Hope this helps

I'm beginning to see that!
I've tried uninstalling and manually deleting files before but I repeated
the process and used JV16 power tools (looks like a hand bit of kit btw.)
Plugged into the USB root hub and also tried connecting to a PCI USB card I
have.
Neither worked.
I already have a card reader for the MSD card which lets me do most of what
I need to.
Its just the fact that it worked before......... its annoying me!
Any more ideas anyone?
Anyway Thank you for your suggestion, it was much appreciated.
Cheers

:-D heh
One more thing you can try: installing mRouter 3.0 form here:
http://www.developer.intuwave.com/Downloads
It's a great deal better than mRouter 2, far more configurable. It is
possible to install on top of the SE software, but it's better to use
Add/remove programs to get shot of v. 2 before installing v.3 just to avoid
any potential conflicts.

Still a no go im afraid.
Installed fine (couldn't find previous version in add/remove but setup found
it and said it would upgrade it, which come to think of it may not have been
best.)
It comes up with the logo in the system tray, but that only shows
'Connecting to Sony Ericsson on Com 3' after I have put the phone on the
base then taken it off again.
Ill give the whole setup a try on my girlfriends laptop and see what happens
but it has worked on this PC and I'm determined it will again!!!!!!

Clean the contacts where the lead plugs into phone.

I have now done this and guess what?! Exactly the same problem. I also tried
attaching my old S700i and a T610 both with the same result.
Three different phones and two different computers and the problem is still
there, which points to the one remaining link - the stand.
I think I'll replace that with a DSS-25 which I assume is superior to the
DSS-20(?) and see what happens.
But that can wait until payday.
Thanks for your help everyone
