A big shout out to all you bleeding edgers,

So I finally finished moving the last of my data over from my Visor to my
P800, and I'm taking stock of how things stand with the übertoy as a PDA
    after four months.

I think I'll save my comments on the built-in apps and desktop integration
for some other post. I just feel like writing a bit on the aftermarket apps
I've installed. It's not a mature platform yet, so the number of programs
is limited and quality varies wildly. (See below for my complete list of
    installed apps.)

Here are the aftermarket programs I wouldn't want to live without:

    - Handy Day: does a great job of displaying the most important info at a
glance, and has several useful extras.

    - File Manager: clunky but indispensable.

    - Opera: its image scaling is its best feature.

Some I'm on the fence about:

    - jABP: I used ABP on my Psion 5, so I have some familiarity with this
banking program, but prefer PocketMoney (Newton or PalmOS versions). ABP is
sufficient but kind of awkward, and has problems importing some QIFs.

    - Handy Base: I like this simple database app! All it needs is built-in
encryption and password protection to be my choice for storing all kinds of
arbitrary data. I will likely register this.

    - Mobipocket Reader: renders eBooks attractively and scrolls them quickly.
BUT, with 180+ documents on my MSD card, it takes an eternity (~30 seconds)
to load, and *another* 15 seconds each time I view the Library. It doesn't
honor any directory structure, lumping together all files in all
subdirectories under Library or Media Files\document. (If there's any way to
group them, I haven't figured it out.) It also seems to quit whenever I
switch to another application, forcing another long relaunch. Very
frustrating, and makes me not want to register. (On my Visor I liked
    ReadThemAll.)

    Things I'm missing:

    - a simple, secure password manager. I've tried Safe and Handy Safe but
didn't like either of them. Both take the approach of presenting you with a
number of predefined categories with too many useless doodads and hoops to
jump through. I just want something like Yaps under PalmOS. If Handy Base
performed encryption, I'd use it for this purpose.

    - an SKey/OPIE calculator (had used pilOTP under PalmOS).

    Errata:

So far my favorite game is Jexed800 (I was a big fan of Vexed on the Palm).
I also like the built-in Solitare. I almost never play any of the other
games I have loaded, even the ones I've registered.

On the network side, I occasionally use SymIRC and am impressed with how
it's progressed. PuTTY has not gotten to the point where it's more than a
novelty, mostly due its inability to transmit control sequences.
MobilePenTester is a fun little toy.

    Full list of user-installed programs:

Azure (haven't gotten this MT weblog client working yet)
    AppForge Booster
    AppForge More Apps
JSmart's "Puzzle Pack" (registered; contains Crossword, Joggle, Labyrinth,
some other games I didn't bother to load)
    GemDropX
    Handy Base (not yet registered)
    Handy Day (registered)
    File Manager
    jABP
    JexedP800
    jRC4
    jText
    JWorm
    minigps (beta)
    MobilePenTester
    Mobipocket Reader (not yet registered)
    Opera
    PuTTY (alpha)
    QuickTimer
    Screen Capture
    SMan
    SymIRC

Re: What's running on my P800

    Same here, I have:
    Contacts Control
    Turkish Dictionary
    DTMF - Dialer
    FileMan
    Flashplay for opera
    Opera
    MyBuddies v.75
    Strategic Assault
    Switcher
and Tracker all installed on my P800. I know its a bunch of junk but
install them to play with and just too lazy to uninstall ;-)
Its only crashed twice and the second time I think it was because the
road was TOO bumpy and it jarred the SIM card loose. Switcher and
FileMan are the only apps in the phone memory, rest are on DUO.

Where things are stored should have no effect on crashing.

FWIW, my P800 has quite a few apps installed, and has never crashed.
