I have noticed that the drawing utility on my Sony-Ericsson T610 has a
problem
with colours.
Each time I edit and save an image, the image gets slightly darker. After a
while, not much remains of the original image.
Has anybody else had this problem? I sent a question to Sony-Ericsson's
customer
support, but no answer yet, except the confirmation they have received the
mail message.
It is easy to reproduce the fault. Create a blank colour image, select a
thick pen,
draw a few lines, change colour, draw a few lines, et cetera. Only after six
or
seven edit/save operations, the problem can bee seen. To show the loss of
luminance (possibly colour too), change name of the file each time you save
and look at the whole series of images in the images overview.

It might be because the images are heavily compressed using .jpg formatting
which is a 'lossy' format. i.e. the more times an image is loaded / saved
the more degraded the image. Happens on every jpg everywhere. Try it on your
PC
That is why graphic artists never save in .jpg format while they are still
working on an image. they might output the final in jpg but keep a master in
..bmp or .tiff so nothing is lost.
you can choose a .jpg files compression setting when saving in better
graphics programs. the more compessed the worse the image

Thanks for your answer. That is probably the reason for the problem.
I am not sure if the T610 supports other formats than jpg, but if it does
support a format that does not have this problem (gif?), it is a pity that
the drawing utility uses jpg when creating new images. To my
knowledge, it is not possible to change the format of an image with
the functions available on the telephone.

JPG is a bit of a necessity in this kind of application - the images take a
fraction of the memory that a non-compressed image would take.

Gifs do have user selectable compression but are not 'lossy' like jpg's. But
the T610 saves out in jpg. It can read gifs and animated gifs

I think, that it's due to the licensing problems with GIF that the
software doesn't write them.
You might have heard of it. The guys who have the patents even wanted
to sue all people with gif-images on their website if the people won't
buy a license from them.

On the other hand, with JPG as the only saveable format on the phone, the
image editor is almost useless in my opinion.
A non-compressed full 16-bit colour image sized 96 x 96 pixels would
be 18 KB big (2 x 96 x 96 bytes).
I still think it should be possible to save non-compressed images on the
T610.
