URGENT: last minute question about t610 before I get one!

What's the battery life like on this phone? I wont be using any WAP or GPRS
stuff. Just calls, sms, and maybe turning the light on to fiddle with my
phone a bit. Pics arent a big thing for me (I've gotten that out of my
system).

My only thought is, that there are many other phones out there on the market
that don't support WAP, GPRS, Bluetooth, IR, etc, and without the built-in
camera, but with better battery capacity, and they are probably a lot
cheaper than the T610. Why buy something that you are not going to use? Do
you buy a car and only use the 1st gear too?
According to SE, the standby time is up to 300 hours, whether this is
correct or not probably depends on the way the phone is being used. The IR,
Bluetooth, display light, etc all consume a lot of the battery charge, as
well as using the phone in an area with poor RF reception.

I get about 5 days on my T616 without using too much GPRS or camera, and
play a fair amount of games on it. That is unless I take it into my
basement and leave it there b/c I live in a crap signal area and it's always
switching between different carriers weak signals--then I get about 4 days.

Well, I will be using bluetooth and of course I'll take pictures, but it's
not something I call a priority so didn't want to mention that I will be
using it in case people, such as yourself , get the wrong impression.

I meant that my "average" daily usage would be a few voice calls, few sms,
and turning the backlight on numerous times during the day (out of habit). I
know that if I use the other things that my battery time will decrease
(duh!). I guess I was just trying to get a comparison that is "standardised"
against my regular usage with my other phones. ie, under same usage
circumstances, I get about 2 and a half days with my Nokia 7650 and about
14hours with my Motorola A830.

Please don't spoil my fun! I really like the T610 and am looking forward to
(hopefully) getting one tomorrow.

That's great! Oh to have a phone that will last more than a few days....(see
my other post where I mention my current battery times!)

And I'll going with the biggest network provider in Australia (Tel$tra), so
hopefully the phone won't have to do a lot of network searching.

Well if it's anything like the T68i, which I understand it replaces, you
should comfortably see about a week between charges if you're not too heavy
with it. My T68i is still on its original battery and I only need to charge
it once a week, even though it is turned on 24*7. I charge mine every Friday
morning/lunchtime. As of now (16:00 Wednesday) it's showing 99 hours of
standby and 2:22 talk time remaining.

Actually, that's a really cool function I haven't seen on other phones. Is
the reading accurate?

Accuracy is not too bad. When fully charged the phone says it has about 250
hours standby remaining ~ approx 10 days. At this point max talk time is
about 10 hours. So by a rough calculation you could argue that each hour of
talking reduces standby by one day. Obviously using other functions such as
Bluetooth, IR or excessive backlighting, for games, for example, will reduce
this further.

Also, if you have poor signal strength then this will hit standby and talk
time, as will the type of network (PCN vs. GSM (or GSM900 vs. GSM1800)).

The phone recalculates time remaining constantly, according to the current
drain at any particular time. This is like a "remaining miles" calculation
in a car - drive fast have fewer miles in the tank; slow down and your range
increases. So with the phone, if you go into a weak signal area the phone
will soon conclude that it has less standby time remaining. Move back into a
strong signal and the standby will increase again. Turn Bluetooth on and the
standby reduces. Turn it off and up it goes.

As a gauge of charge remaining this beats the pants off the usual 3-4 bars
that really have no meaning at all on other phones. e.g. if your phone is
showing 1 bar of battery does that mean it is 25% full, or 1% full or
anything in between or even above? Who knows? The predictive feature of the
T68 is very good indeed.

It does not take a rocket scientist to conclude that if you use the phone a
lot then you will not get the 250 or 300 hours anticipated by the phone when
it was fully charged.

The only niggle that I have found with accuracy is that when you're down to
perhaps 150 hours or less remaining, if you turn the phone off and back on
you will possibly find that you now have less hours remaining. e.g. today my
phone was showing 124 hours remaining. I turned it off/on and the hours
remaining was only 99. This really doesn't bother me as the phone has been
on for a full five days and it now turns out I've only got four days left,
not five. Big deal! I'm gonna charge it in two days anyway.

By the way, I've had my phone and the original battery since March last
year, so that's 17 months. I think predictive accuracy was more accurate
when new but again, with an easy week between charges who cares;-)

I'm a yank living in a rural area (moving to Boston in a few days)--so
network coverage is spotty around my house with all carriers, even the old
analog system has troubles sometimes.
If I go about 1/2 km north or south I get a great signal! Oh well.. good

Being the largest provider does not necessarily mean it'll give you the
best signal strength around your neighbourhood!

Unless you are out of town, all 3 majors provide pretty much similar
coverage.

Of course not! The T610 seems to be a great phone, and it seems like
everyone has one nowadays, (except me, I think I will have to keep my T39 a
little while longer), so go for it!

There has, however, been some critical voices raised about the T610. The
first sets released suffered from a hissing noise in the speaker, and many
people have complained about poor reception compared to other phones (like
the T39, for example), and someone complained about that there is not any
decent ring signal available, all of them are of that fancy polyphonic type.

The battery meter is available on the T39 also, but it seems to have
disappeared on newer models, and I don't think it is there on the T610
either, probably because of the accuracy problems. I think, however, that
the meter is as accurate as an extrapolation can be. What it does is, to
measure the current power consumption and calculate the remaining standby
time given the current battery voltage and maybe some extra information
about the battery. The problem is, that the power consumption is not
constant, it varies depending on the signal strength and whether various
extra functions in the phone are turned on or not.
Also, bear in mind that if the meter says 100 hours standby, 3 hours talk
time, you will not have both. If the phone rings after 100 hours, you cannot
speak for very long in it, and if you talk in the phone for an hour, there
will not be much standby time left.
