I have just recently got the T610 and whilst I am enjoying the phone, i am
concerned somewhat of the sound quality when used with a bluetooth
headset...the make is Sony Ericsson and the model is HBH-30.

Is this awful sound quality a known issue with this phone, or do I have a
    faulty model??

    thanks in anticipation...

I'm using a Jabra FreeSpeak with my T616 and it works great. Land line
    audio quality.

Many people have remarked that there is a problem with many BT headsets
with T610s. My T610 (on R1A081 firmware) has dreadful quality with both my
HBH-35 and HBH-15 headsets, both of them are perfect with my T68.

I have now sent the T610 off for a firmware upgrade to R1L013 (and my
HBH-35 for repair as it suddenly refused to power on or charge!), this
apparently helps in most cases although it is not a 100% solution.

Apparently it might be to do with poor decoupling of the power supply to
the Bluetooth transceiver in the phone, the T610 seems to have a higher
current demand that the T68 and this may not have been allowed for.

I would suggest that you call the SE customer service line in your country
and ask them what you can do to get it fixed.

I use HBH-30 with T39m - without any problems. Audio quality is not
    hifi studio, but OK nevertheless.

I had a T610 combined with a HBH-35 and experienced the same problems.
Even the latest software updates on both devices helped.
Still had bad sound quality and connection dropping.
Went 3 times for repairing and finally received a new device as an exchange,
    since then it works perfect.

It seem that SE has a big hardware problem with some of the T610 series.
Ask for in shop for an other T610 for testing...!

    Hope it works!

My T610 (also R1A081 with Celistica hiss fix) sounds OK with a Jabra BT200
headset. Not tried it with any other BT headset though.

Of the reports I've heard the BT200 does seem to be one that works fairly
well. I don't know why it is better, but it may be to do with the way that
any DC offset on the burst caused by frequency slew across the burst is
handled. I think that the phone's Bluetooth output has a frequency
transient which may be caused by insufficient decoupling of the supply to
the BT transceiver. It's the only explanation that would make sense,
probably coupled with some non optimal programming of various registers in
    the BT baseband chip.
