I'm really happy for you. Really.
Personally it's not my kinda phone. I don't see why phone manufacturers
keep bundling so many needless features into their latest phones. When I
need a phone and I want a long battery life, reliable technology and a
nice interface to make everything easy to use. I do not need a camera, a
colour screen, the ability to run Java programs, the ability to listen to
mp3's or watch movies or any of that crap.
Mobile phone manufacturers need to have a reality check quickly. They're
betting too much that eveyone want smartphones which do everything,
whereas most folk just want phones which are reliable and let them make
phone calls.
Having said all that, I'd buy a Sony Ericsson or Nokia phone if they came
with a built in Breville sandwich toaster. Now that's a useful built in
function.

Nope, my profile has been matched to an Ericsson R520m.
Why?
The call quality is exceptional, it's tri-band, it has an excellent
speakerphone function, the batteries seem to have charge for a week or a
bit more, it has an external aerial which gives me better signal than my
previous Nokia at the office, and it was dirt cheap because it's two years
old.
I weep since this will probably be the last decent phone I own. In the
next few years we're all going to have cameras, Java and pointless "3G"
video calling rammed down our throats.

I'm sure I saw this phone, or a similar one, on special offer at
www.expansys.com probably worth entering into the searchbox when you might
need one.

Re: nokia 6600 is the best
All phone companies, especially the big ones, still provide with basic-need
models which do at least one thing good: calling. I understand your
frustration and I wouldn't suggest you the 6600 even if you were lamenting
about another phone. But there ARE some people that love these features.
Let me tell you why about my story.
- I'm a member of a forum/site about cars and we love to post spy photos of
the odd new or modded car model we see. --> Photo camera.
- I have to travel 20 minutes everyday with the underground and I need
something to pass my time. --> Java Apps & (especially) Games.
- I'm a medical student and I heavily rely on a good calendar --> Calendar.
- I have funny friends who tell good jokes. --> Video recorder.
Now, according the use I planned, I went out and bought 6600. Wasn't that
the best course of action?
Yes. I'm very happy about it.
Constantine.

There will be basic models on offer even in the future. Heck, I bet soon
we'll start seeing disposable GSM phones like we have disposable cameras...
Anyway, what's wrong with progress? We don't drive around in Ford Model-T:s
anymore. We don't fly around in prop-driven biplanes. In a couple years most
every phone's going to have a camera built into it, even budget models, but
what's the harm in that? If you don't like it, don't use it. Heck, maybe
even you will change one day and see the benefits of having a handy phone
camera.
The price on technology is in constant free-fall. Two or three years from
the introduction of feature X, it is no longer cheaper NOT to include
feature X in a new model than to actually include it. Hence the rash of
"useless" features such as cameras, java, stuff like that in current and
upcoming models.

Re: nokia 6600 is the best
Very nice written, Lenny. Summarizes my thoughts on the matter. Personally,
I find the integrated camera a very good feature.
The only thing I lament about these new features is that the GPRS costs (to
send the photos and/or download Java) are still very costly, at least here
in Italy.

I think you are complaining for nothing. Not ALL their phones are
trying to camera-smartphone-everything. If you want a bare-boned
model, there are several options. For example Nokia 1100, 2100, 3100,
5100, 6100 etc. (do you see the pattern here? ;-)) are for people who
don't want all the extra features but want a PHONE that is light,
small, cheap etc.
The reason they are trying to sell also the more advanced phones is
because that is where the money is. Those bare-boned models you are
talking about, the margins are so low with them. They are not good
business, and they are an over-competed territory already, especially
with all those no-brand phones that you get for "free" with a
subscription.
I personally have two extra requirements besides just being a phone: a
working calendar that can be synchronized with MS Outlook calendar,
and a speaker so that I can use it as a "phone conference phone" in a
meeting, if needed. And I'd of course prefer it is as small and
lightweight as possible. So a Nokia 6100 seems to be a good option for
me (it has surprisingly good external speaker quality, considering its
tiny size).

For people like you there is always Nokia 1100 or 2100, for example.
So what was the complaint again? ;-)
The problem is that the margins are veeery low with these featureless
phones. You usually get such no-brand phones made in Vietnam for
"free" when you subscribe to any phone operator. Over-competed
territory already, while feature-rich phones are where the money is.

Umm, no. There will always be phones like Nokia 1100 for people like
you.
