P800 crashed again

Grr!

I lost all the data in my internal drive in September, and now its' gone and
done it again!

Admittedly, it wasn't a clever thing to do. I taped a 10 minute voice memo,
totalling 600k (I assume in AMR format), then tried sending it as a PCMail.
It chugged, it slowed, it became unresponsive, I became uneasy... eventually
turning off the phone.

But alas, too late. First it took ages to start up. Then it moved on to
'out of memory' errors, and prompted me to delete, what I assume were
temporary files, one by one. When that didn't work, it hung completely, and
I had to remove the battery. After 2-3 power-on cycles, it finally came up
with "Your internal memory is now corrupt and will now be reformatted". The
rest, as they say, is history. As are 2 months of Banking records, 400
SMSes, etc. etc.

So - anyone know of any decent backup solutions out there? Not the Sony
Ericsson "go on, use the cradle, lose the use of your phone/PDA for a couple
of hours while it backs up your phone and 128Mb memory stick, and have no
choice over the backup range" afterthought of a 'solution'. Ideally,
something that copies the Internal RAM to the supplied Flash card, 'a la
FlashBack on the Psion5mx?

Or alternatively - maybe something on the PC that automatically synchronises
or copies files over the 'My P800' browser link whenever the phone is
connected.?

Any suggestions?

I know that you don't like the included SE backup software but if you just
select phone then it only takes around 2-3 minutes to perform a backup (in
my experience). As the memory card is not affected by a reformat of the
internal drive anything on there should be safe.

I am afraid that this is as much help as I can offer. Sorry that it doesn't
answer you specific query but this is the best solution I can think of at
the moment.

I do agree with you that it would be good if someone could write some back
up software to copy things like messages and contacts from the phone to the
MS duo. You could then backup data on the go and at least restore the most
basic/essential phone features without having to use your PC.

That's exactly what I used to recover my P800, following a problem I
had with the SIM card holder. This was fixed under warranty and I
totally restored the phone, following a factory re-set prior to repair,
from the SE backup file. The Memory Card was unaffected - phone was back
up and running in minutes.

Also, everything on the Memory Card, I had stored elsewhere anyway -
pics, sound files, apps etc, as they originated from a PC prior to loading.

The P800 SE bundled backup utility is fine by me - now if you really
want to get upset, get an SPV! :-)

at least you can back it up, us mac users have no way off backing up
the internal memory! (unless we buy vpc)

I'm thinking of fixing my Psion 5mx :-)
