Must choose one: 6610, t600, t68i, r520m, P280, v66?

Dear friends, cell phone experts, lurkers,

I am most, most, most grateful for your help during the past several
days. I have learned so much about gsm and cell phones. As you know, I
have to be in India by early September and must make a choice now.

Through various channels---Ebay, other auction places, dealers, and
offers from private individuals---I have the opportunity to purchase
the following phones:

Motorola P280 V66
Nokia 6610 6100
Sony Ericsson R520M t68i t600

Prices vary somewhat, but not enough to worry about (I have already
eliminated those I can't afford), so I am going to ignore that factor .


With these seven phones on the table, which one would you pick?

I want the phone simply to make and receive calls. Should receive poor
signals, and send out good ones both to the tower and to my ears. Keys
should work when pressed. It should be light, survive in the pockets
and backpacks, and hold the charge for a long time.

I personally use R520m. It has been excellent for me for the past few years.
It is one of the better reception phones of the Ericsson lineup.

There's something sellers mostly don't tell you, firmware version. Some
firmware versions for some phones are just messed up badly. Other than that,
the newer is always better. To find out, dial:
SE: Right * Left Left * Left *
Nokia: *#0000#
Motorola: not sure.

I'd personally go with the Nokia 6100. I've had that one and was very
pleased with it. It's very small, it has handsfree-function (which is very
very handy) and great reception-quality. Phone has long standby-times as
well.

Nokia 6610, hands down. It's the best phone I've ever owned. It will
give you better RF performance than the Motorola and SE models and
offers a nice array of features.

How can one keep firmware updated? Is this something you can
download by dialing some #, or take the phone to them? My present
phone, nothing to do with this Asia trip, is Nokia.

How would you like to get a call from the police complaining that
you have just phoned the emergency number when there was no emergency?
It happened when I was there - but not to me. The emergency number can
be connected from a locked keyboard, but you do not have this problem
with a phone which fold shut.

With an ebay purchase you may not get the instruction book, so it
could help to get a phone whose manual is downloadable so you can
look through the features to see if any would be of particular help.

I like the V66. It is small, neat and stylish. I think it is the
kind of phone you could happily keep for future trips.

How would you like to get a call from the police complaining that

Thanks. Since this term keeps coming up, let me clarify what RF
performance is. Does it refer to the actual talk signals you send
and receive, or to connection with computers etc?

Call your service provider or phone manufacturer.

Radio Frequency performance. Usually it refers to the ability to
make/receive a call and to hold on to that call based on signal strength.
