We bought a V551 for my son last May as part of our signing up for the
Cingular family plan. The phone worked fine until last night. Now all of a
sudden, the screen display no longer works and he cannot hear the phone ring
on incoming calls. He can still make outgoing calls. What kind of warranty
comes with that phone?
If the phone is still covered by warranty, will they send me a replacement
or do I have to return the phone first? If it is out of warranty, what are
my options for replacing it? Will Cingular sell me a low-cost replacement
(say for $50) if I extend my contract out, or would I have to pay whatever
the full retail price may be? If I buy a replacement phone on my own
without going through Cingular, will they activate it for me?

Re: V551 problem
New phones come with a 1 year warranty. Assuming no physical damage
Cingular will send you a replacement (no charge) and you will return the
defective phone in the box the replacement came in. If you do not send the
phone back promptly or if it is determined there is abuse, water damage,
etc. a large fee will be assessed on your next bill.

If you send the phone back under a warrantly claim, and they determine
that it was damaged by you (water, dropped, etc.), they send you a
replacement for full price. They do not contact you and ask if you want
to pay full price before hand. You cannot return the replacement, so be
sure the damage is not your fault before making a warranty claim.
You purchased it last May, not quite a year ago. Some plans allow for a
free to low cost upgrade within ten months of new service (mine did), if
you commit for another two years. Go to Cingular's web site, sign in,
and click on upgrades. This will show if your son's phone number is
eligible for an upgrade yet.

Re: V551 problem
Rick,
Plain and simple, as long as you or your SON is not at fault, like
water or abuse , u know stuff along those guidelines, than your fine,
call on monday they will get the IMEI number and send a refurb too you.
I think you have an option for expdited / faster shipping methods.
Ask and they will tell.
Thats the answer to your problem plain and simple, they only thing that
will change is after they get the broken phone back and find out that
water or some neglect of use and care broke the phone, than your in for
a large bill on the next billing cycle.
Plain and simple, no other way to explain it.
And if your son screwed up with the phone go on ebay u can get a brand
spanking new V551 for around 150, a hell of lot cheaper than getting
ripped off by cingulard.
