I gotta sneaky idea you are referring to the lil hole in the phone that has
a plastic plug in it. That is for the Qwik-Release Belt clip that comes with
the phone from Motorola (That No one uses, I never even stuck mine in it )
Its a actually a lil spike that sticks in the hole and has prongs that hold
the phone on to it. When you press the release, the prongs retract and the
phone comes off. There is DEFINITELY no brass port on a P280. I am holding
it in my hand as I make these observations (gotta be careful anytime you say
anything on a newsgroup, the "experts" will get u EVERY time LOL)

So, I also have a P280. And, unlike you, I have actually used the
quick release belt clip (for at least 30 seconds before deciding that
it was useless). And I can assure you that the little port on the back
has nothing at all to do with the belt clip. The belt clip attaches on
those little dimples on the side.

The thing on the back isn't brass; it's likely gold plated just like
most antenna connectors. I've examined it, and it's soldered into the
motherboard rather than being part of the phone's plastic case. It's
directly under the antenna, and looks to be the same kind of connector
as the one on my Motorola T720i.

I know an antenna connector when I see one. That is an antenna
    connector.

Well then, I'll know for certain when I examine one myself. Thanks
    for the comments guys.

I'm examining my P280 now. The port sure looks like an antenna
connector to me too. The quick release belt clip attaches to the
plastic dimples. The port has a post, like a super mini CB antenna
connector. But it doesn't appear to be threaded. I assume,
therefore, the connector is a friction fit.

    Thanks again, Doug

    Hi Doug,

I don't know what the connector is. I know that it is not MCX as I tried my
Garmin antenna. However, if you do a Google search for P280 external
antenna, you will get a supplier or two. They have antennas and the adapter
for the 280. They could probably also tell you what the connector is.
Motorola might know as well. :-) Please let us know what you find.

    Cheers,

    Ian
