I am going to Paris for about 12 days. I am thinking of taking Nextel's
suggestions to use this company (Cellhire) as a cellphone provider while
I'm there.
Any comments about them would be appreciated.

Last August, my wife was going to Paris, Barcellona and the UK on business.
I looked into 5 or 6 cellphone rental options, including Cellhire. I found
that the best rates were offered by www.Travelcell.com and it had a clean
record with the Better Business Bureau. I also posted a request for info in
several of the alt.cellular newsgroups.
My wife rented the phone from TravelCell. It worked out well. There were no
problems. She would rent from them again.

There are about three or four phones that Nextel lists. However, They
recommend using this service. It makes you wonder. The cost is $1.29 a
minutes plus the cost of the phone using the Nextel phone. As for
"heavans" (sic) "for bid you should not use a phone ", the trip is to
meet and be with friends as well as see the sites, so not having a phone
would be dramatically stupid on my part!!!

Re: Cellhire -- Anyone rent from them for service in Europe?
I found that I could buy an "unlocked" GSM phone on e-bay, and go with a
"prepaid" SIM from the provider of your choice once overseas, to be much
cheaper overall than renting a phone. The GSM phone has been to New Zealand
and Germany and works fine. Buy from a private person...the "unlocked GSM"
peddlers on e-bay charge too much.
As far as which provider to use....talk to A PARISIAN to find out which
company provides the best service....and get their prepaid SIM kit. No need
to worry about that until you get there.....the airports have kiosks and
provider stores are all over town.
There are a few websites that sell GSM Star-Tacs brand new for $125. I got
a v60 GSM used for $150.
This is what most "frequent" travelers overseas do. Price it out, you may
find that it works for you.
