I don't understand why Motorola would put a speaker on the back of a =
phone. Why would you want everyone to hear your conversation better than =
    you?

I have a i85s and the speaker is on the front of the phone, where it =
should be. The audio quality is great, and in public environments I turn =
the volume down and I hold the phone close to my ear so other people =
    can't hear as well.=20

My friend is a new Nextel subscriber and got a couple i205 phones. I =
have tried them out and I really dislike them. The speaker is on the =
BACK of the phone for some reason, and if I use his phone and try to =
turn it down and listen, it doesn't work well unless I hold the phone =
backwards. Who's the Einstein that thought that one up? When I use his =
phone, I feel like I'm broadcasting my conversation to everyone.

I've always loved Motorola products, but lately they've been doing some =
pretty wacky stuff, like putting the PTT button on the front of =
talkie-talkies instead of on the side, and putting speakers on the back =
of phones instead of on the front. I can only wonder what they may do =
    next...

they've been putting the speaker on the back for a while now...i'll open my i50 tonite but i think it's on the back of that too and i would've have thought the same for the i85. i also like it on the back.

it does make the phones thinner like mmdstech said but it was also done for the i9x series because the flip faces in (towards the holster, to protect the front panels and screens) so that it can be heard better when it is worn in the holster.

Then perhaps you should turn your home stereo speakers around and aim =
them toward the wall to get that better amplified sound.

As far as I know, they've never put the speaker on the back. I believe =
it's always been put in the front under the keypad. On the flip phones, =
the speaker is also underneath the keypad on the pre-falcon series =
    (condor) phones.

I don't know if it makes it thinner or not, but I'd rather have a =
slightly thicker good sounding phone than a slightly thinner bad =
sounding one. Aside from the speaker being on the back, the sound =
quality is much better on the i85s than on the i205 IMO.

Try turning the phone so the back faces you.

I agree. I have the i530 flip phone w/ speaker in back. I prefer to use the
phone closed with DC and after dialing cell number, closed also....unless of
course I'm in a public setting that requires common sense in which case I go
"earpiece". I'm not sure exactly of the internal configuration of the
microphone.....but it seems to work real well for me by just speaking into
the external "speaker". For my use and the configuration of the i530 it
    works great.

all condor phones have the speaker underneath the keypad, but facing to the back of the phone AT the battery...it shoots the sound at your hand.

The speaker was placed in the back to make the phone thinner and to help the
speakerphone work better (sound travels away from the mic, thus the cutting
in and out of the speaker phone doesn't exist as much). If you hold the
phone in your hand (and not just between your fingers) the audio actually
does reverb off your hand, this makes the volume louder than it is coming
out of the speaker. It also help the sound of the ringers when the phone is
placed on a desk/tabletop with the back of the phone facing down (speaker
facing down). You'll notice that the speaker is lifted from the flat
surface, thus enabing the sound to hit and bounce of the surface of whatever
it's sitting on (thus making the sound louder, or at least that's what it
    seems like).
