Anyone have any experience with these phones? I am curious because i like
the built in GPS feature of the phone, not too mention the "heavy-duty"
    appearance of it.
    Thanks,
    james

Mine is currently in the living room running happily on the 38th floor
of a high-rise. It is rugged. I have used the GPS, but only for test
purposes. That is to say, I already know where my Walgreens drug store
is, so I really didn't need to know its coordinates but that is where I
tested it. It is reasonably accurate. I bought the yellow model because
it stands out among all the grey and dark electronic gadgets in my home.
I can find it without having to search too hard for it (I'm a little RG
    color blind).

I like the Direct Connect feature of Nextel very much. I use it to
contact family and friends (not friends and family ;- ))to see if they
want to talk on the regular cell phone connection. The signal strength
from Nextel is really very good in most of the places I travel.

I only have one gripe. The talk button is on the right and the
end/hang-up button is on the left. Just the exact opposite of all my
other phones. Takes some getting used to. I've ended some calls before
    they began.

    Re: Motorola i58sr phones

Love it, love it, love it.

I used to use the i85/i88s phones and switched over to the i58sr
because I was spending too much on replacing the i8x versions. Like
most people I'm brutal on the phone.

The functionality is great, however, it does have a bulkier battery,
so you aren't going to fit this as easily in your pocket or inside
door handle of your car. Other than that, it is defintely
full-functionality. I love the GPS becuase I have a laptop with MS
Streets and Trips and it integrates without issue. I get to see where
my car is on the map and it is extremely helpful when I'm not sure
where my next turns are. The GPS only updates about once every 8-10
seconds, so you don't want to keep that in mind if you are on a
highway with mutiple exits in close proximity. Also, the dealy can be
a bit long if you are on a wooded back road and it can't get the
signal due to wet leaves. I have a moonroof in my car, so I may be
getting better reception of the satellites than someone who doesn't.
The rubber over-molding helps the phone stay in place on the dash as
    well.

AS for the durability of the phone, I was once attempting to walk down
an industrial metal staircase and slipped on water. The phone when
tumbling down approximately 20 stairs. Still works perfectly and the
rubber hardly shows scratches. The i88s version shows a scratch on
any drop. I heard of one person who was working on a small antenna
tower, dropped his from a good distance and it survived without issue,
but I don't know the surface it dropped onto.

My only complaint is the screen can get scratched easily, so you want
to wacth for that. I haven't had a scratch to the screen due to
drops, however, accidently dragging the phone across a roough surface
or picking it up from a drop with a minor drag has scratched the
    screen.

If you already have nextel service, consider getting yours from e-bay.
You won't have to sign a year contract because you can just move your
existing sim to the new phone, and if you decide you don't like the
phone, you may have saved a little on the mistake.

    Good luck.

I agree with your comments about the SEND and HANGUP buttons. As you say
they are exactly the opposite of my other cell phones. Takes awhile to
get used to but thats probably the worst I could say about the i58SR.
Mine's Gray, the wife's is Yellow.

Location Tracking service on cell phones with GPS (mine is an i58)

I finaly found a good use for the GPS in my cell phone!

I purchased a Nextel/Motorola i58 handset that has GPS, but was not
sure which service to use to track my location.

I finally found a great service at www.addressbook.com - and best of
    all it's free!

I just signed up to the location service on addressbook.com and can
now see my current address / location of my phone on a MapQuest map.
It works great, was easy to setup and is easy to use by going to
www.addressbook.com. You can even press a button on the phone and in
less than 5 seconds it shows you the current address of everyone in
your group (your teenagers, co-workers, etc.) It's secure and if
people do not want to have their location displayed they can turn the
location tracking off and still use their phone. Buzz.

addressbook.com is not free any more. Another free service you can check out now is AccuTracking.com. I think there will be more and more free tracking websites in the future, good...
