    Hello peeps,

I've configured my 6600 to retrieve my pop email no sweat, it works a charm.
Yet when I try to send an email it keep telling me 'Sending Message Failed!'

Before anyone states the obvious - I have checked to see if I have entered
the correct details in the outgoing SMTP server field again and again and as
far as I can see it is correct.

If it helps, the account that I'm having trouble with is with NTL.

Could anyone throw any light on my trouble?

    Much appreciated everybody.

What SMTP server are you using , because NTL didn't allow smtp from a mobile
, might have changed now though

Sorry to dwell on the obvious, but open a command prompt in Windows
(Start button, Run..., then type 'cmd' and press enter.)

Then just check that the SMTP server is ok by typing:

    telnet your.server.com 25 [ENTER]

    (The screen should clear and some SMTP server message has to appear;
basically anything besides 'unable to connect..'.

    *******
Also note that your SMTP server needs to be the SMTP server of your
PHONE GSM network provider, NOT your internet/email provider!
    *******

(Again, sorry if this was obvious but other than this I can't really
    think of anything)

    Han.

    That's incorrect. I am using my 6600 with my internet/email provider's SMTP
server. Although a lot of ISPs only let you talk to their SMTP server
through their dial-up/broadband/etc. connection, some of them do offer an
authenticating serve/connection. This enables you to talk to the SMTP server
by providing a username and password. For example, for pipex, the usual SMTP
server is smtp.dsl.pipex.com and can only be connected to through a pipex
connection. smtpauth.dsl.pipex.comcan be reached via any connection
providing you give a valid username and password.
I think you'll find a lot of ISPs do provide the authenticating server but
you might need to ask them.

Try using the SMTP server of the mobile phone network you are on. So
if you're on O2, use smtp.o2.co.uk, or on Vodafone use 212.183.156.230

    smtp.ntlworld.com work's fine on my 6600.
I have also been using this on my 7650 for the last 12 month's.
What dial up number are you using? it has to be the 0845 PAYG ntl number.(which im sure you are using)

A temporary way round this is to select "New multimedia message" type your message & attach any pic's then type the email address in where you would put the phone number and send it.
it works out cheaper when your abroad this way :-)

Ok, you're right of course, but there are few providers these days
that have their SMTP servers not under lock and bolt.. I don't think
6600 allows you to specify a username and password for SMTP? 3650
doesn't anyway, but it's possible Nokia added it for 6600.

Still, SMTP of your phone provider should be faster. (No
    authentication needed and shorter route)

Pipex have the only authenticating one I've used although I'm sure the
majority of ISPs will provide this service for a number of reasons.

    I don't think
    > 6600 allows you to specify a username and password for SMTP?

In the mailbox settings you get to specify a username and password, but only
once. I can only assume it uses the same u/p combination for authenticating
    to POP, SMTP and IMAP.

I think the speed difference is negligable. I believe the only extra traffic
produced will be a few bytes at the beginning where it authenticates. I
don't believe there is any form of encryption introduced that will increase
the amount of data sent/received for the rest of the session.
As for route, I don't doubt they've outsourced their mail servers to India!
I agree that in theory you should get better results by using your providers
    SMTP server.
