V600 - The long wait..and the disappointment!!

Well, after chasing around for about 3 months to get a sim-free V600, I
finally picked one up yesterday.......and returned it today!!

The phone itself feels great - solid and substantial, the screen is
exceptionally clear (though the fonts are a bit small), the camera is
excellent quality as is the speakerphone!

Unfortunately the data and bluetooth implementation suck big time!!

I have not used a Moto for around 5 years, sticking primarily to Sony
Ericssons. My current Z600 works flawlessly with my 4150 Ipaq, DLink
bluetooth dongle and SE bluetooth carkit.

The V600 by comparison was a complete blowout with the Ipaq, crashed my XP
machine when used in conjunction with the bluetooth dongle and was a real
pain in the bluetooth carkit. Couple this with funnies like the power save
dim screen activating even when on a call, the inability to transfer
contacts from my Z600 en mass (one by one worked "OK", but swapped all of
the first and last names around) and both sim and phone contacts being
displayed in the phonebook.

The whole concept of "web sessions" was a bit difficult to get my head
around. I find it incredible to think that you've got to change the dafault
web session setting every time you want to change from WAP to Mobile web to
MMS!!

Also, the phone only supports DUN and OBEX transfer via bluetooth...no
serial port...therefore my Mphone on the Ipaq doesn't work.

In the bluetooth carkit (admittedly a SE HCB-30 I think), the stereo muted
whenever a key on the keypad was pressed!!

I soooooo wanted to love this phone, but I think the firmware is buggy and
the bleutooth flakey to say the least.

Lastly, I phoned Motorola support to request assistance with some of
them...and was told that it would take about a week to get back to me..no
good to me as I use it for business!

Some if not all what you mention can be adjusted if only you read the
manual.

I don't know what you mean here but I use mine with my good old Palm M505
via bluetooth of course.

Well you assessed a whole lot in the short time you had it!

Moto UK were helpful whenever I have called them, so far all the things I
need to adjust on the handset is simple enough to do, in fact so much so, I
forget it has a camera on it .

Ohh that sucks BIG time

I was looking at the Motorola 600 as well, umm maybe look at Ericcson and
Nokia a bit more.

Really disappointing to see you had these problems with such a promising
spec of phone.
My brother uses a SPV (upgraded the firmware though) for his Pocket PC web
link stuff and its flawless , SPV2 looks like the same phone with camera and
better software.
Or get a Xda II and have the lot in one !

I too have found Motorola Technical support to be sadly lacking. After
months, I am still unable to synch my Accompli 008 with my desktop via
Infrared dongle (my Sony Vaio has no serial port).
It is infuriating when, each time you ring, they say they'll ring you
back 'within two days'. When, and if, they eventually do, you are
unlikely to be in the office and the whole rigmarole starts again.
Much as I like the Accompli, this alone would make me think twice
about buying a Motorola again in the future.

Didn't really test the camera, spent too long trying to sync.

I couldn't agree more. And the lack of infra red as altenative means
BlueTooth must be used.

I eventually got Mobile Phone Tools to connect but it wouldonly
transfer about a third of my contacts from Outlook. I could send ono
by one from my Toshiba e740 or either of my 6310is but that is
unacceptable in an 'advanced businessphone'

Didn't go there, Ionly tried mobile web from e740 and that was OK

I was looking for the picture files as with the T610 I had but of
course the BT fell over.

I'd go for the z600 if only I could store addresses/notes with
contacts as I can in the 6310is, Think I'll wait for a decent price on
a 6230.
