My daughter has an 8310 which is very slow when you try to open messages.
Is there anything we can do to improve this?

Are the messages stored on the SIM or in the phone? If on the sim, then you
should be able to get a faster sim.

Yes, dump some of the old messages from the archive folders. The more you
have saved, the slower the phone. Behaves in exactly the same was as a
computer. The more stuff saved, the slower it becomes.
