Have asked the following in several groups (including Nokia) with
minimal response. Hopefully, someone here can help:
I'm switching from AT&T to Cingular and am getting ready to transfer
data from a Nokia 6360 (no sim card) to a new 6340i and have some
questions regarding the the 6340i sim card and its uses.
I have used the Nokia PC Suite to download (via IR on a laptop) the
6360's data. I want to transfer this data to the 6340i via IR.
1. Will the transfer (PC Suite Content Copier) only load the data into
the Phone memory of the 6340i?
2. If I were to transfer 6340i data back and forth via laptop IR, does
the PC Suite Content manager allow options for storing data from and to
the sim card?
3. The 6340i users manual states that the sim card memory can only hold
one number per name (as opposed to Phone memory which can hold multiple
numbers). Since, typically, I will have several phone numbers per
contact, does this reduce the utility of using the sim card to store
data? I thought the reason for the sim card was to allow easy transfer
of ALL data from one phone to another.
4. When setting up the phone, is it best to set the memory to Phone and
SIM or something else (i.e., Phone only)?
5. Also, the manual indicates if the phone data is copied to both Phone
and sim memory, the display will show both entries - isn't this somewhat
confusing or am I missing something? I want to use the sim card as a
copy of the phone memory to make it easy to tranfer data to newer phones
at a later time by simply swapping out the sim card.
Hope my questions make sense.
Thanks,
Harvey

Re: 6340i Memory Transfer Questions
can't answer 1 or 2 because i don't use PC suite.
3) SIM cards are generic between all GSM phones. they know nothing of voice
tags, picture caller id nor any other phone specific items. Since a SIM card
can be moved between phones it needs to be as basic as possible. IF you
could put multiple numbers per name then put the SIM in a phone that only
understood 1 number per name which would it pick?
4) Whether to put the number in SIM or phone is a personal decision. imagine
though that you store all your important numbers to the phone and tomorrow
you phone won't turn on. all your numbers could be lost especially if your
only "repair" option is replacement. if the numbers are on the SIM, move the
SIM from your broken phone to the replacement and all your numbers follow
you.
5) true, having a copy on the phone and SIM will show 2 copies of each
number when scrolling through the phone listing with the phone set out of
the box. there is however a setting in the names menu that will allow you to
select phone and SIM, phone only, SIM only.
my personal preference would be to store all numbers in the SIM until you
run out of room then move the unimportant ones to the phone. that way if you
ever have a phone emergency all your important numbers will be quickly
retrievable.

Re: 6340i Memory Transfer Questions
Thanks for the info.
Is the setting of the memory to Phone only, Sim only or Phone and Sim
just a display setting? That is, can you continue to save data to either
or both memories and simply choose to display only one of the memories?
Thanks,
Harvey
