Hi
In order to use the Nokia PC Suite software, does the user HAVE to have the
Nokia cable (DKU-5), or can it be used with any other USB phone/PC cable? I
recently bought a cable from the local Vodafone shop which came with some
software called Handset Manager, which seems to work OK, but I would like to
make it work with PC Suite as well, but so far have had no success.
Have Nokia been bug*ers and designed their software such that it will only
work with their cable?
Any help would be much appreciated,
Jon.

Re: PC Suite cable question
The third party cables are generally designed as FBus cables rather
than DKU5 type (even though both will fit the pop port of the phone).
There are some third party cables which are DKU5 type which do support
PC Suite i.e. Ositech cables. However, they are the same price as the
genuine Nokia DKU5 cables. It seems that yours is FBus rather than
DKU5, and will not support PC Suite.

Sorry can't help on the question about the cables, but I've tried the
Nokia PC suite through IR. Yes it works... but its pretty awful
software. I quess it is written in some inefficient language (maybe
visual basic) as it really clogs up your registry and scatters dozens
of files across your hard drive. Also, it adds stuff that starts every
time you fire up your computer, which only eats up resources.
If the Handset Manager you mention works ok, it might be best to stick
with that.

Hello, Jon.
Nokia PC Suite works via original Nokia cables only. Another option
- to use IR port or Bluetooth adapter (if your phone supports
Bluetooth). But personally I recommend you to take a look at our
Oxygen Phone Manager II - http://www.opm-2.com. It works with almost
all cables and Nokia phone models and has much more features than
other similar products.
Best regards, Oleg Fyodorov.
Oxygen Software - tools for your Nokia.
Oxygen Phone Manager II - all you want from your Nokia.

My experience with a cdma 3589i non-Nokia DKU-5 clone cable requiring
PL2303 drivers: didn't work with Winblows pc suite & Linux gnokii &
gammu. Phone screen indicated a "data connection" but complained
"Enhancement not supported".
I didn't have a chance to try Oxygen, tho I prefer Linux software.

As that handset appears to have iRDA(infrared). Nokia PC-suite works
pefectly well via that medium, no need for a cable.

Check out Mobius from
http://www.logomanager.co.uk/php/products.php?id=53 - I think it is
great software for the 3589i - inexpensive, and will work with any
cable, not just a genuine Nokia DKU5.

Thanks for the link. Mobius looks interesting, and the site also has
info on the range of cables etc that can be used to hook up your phone
and computer (it sells them too).
I guess infrared, with USB connection, most sense. Nearly every phone
appears compatable with nearly every phone...

Good conclusion- I use the Actisys IR4000US- has very reliable
drivers, easy to get up and running, and looks great- can use on
laptop and PC. The same site has them at

Re: PC Suite cable question
Not 100% sure about the cable but as a matter of interest the image
converter for wallpaper etc is much better on Handset Manager than with PC
Suite.
