Somehow, with several Nokias coming and going, I have ended up with
both of these AC chargers: a 7U and a 12U. Is one of these supposed to
be better than the other?
FWIW, my 7U is 110V and heavier; the 12 U is 110-220V and lighter in
weight. Both are made in China. Both plugs are US style and are only
needed here.

Assuming the suffix U means the US plug, they sound similar to my ACP-7X
and 12X for the UK market. The 12X(U) is the later one and comes with most
new Nokias. It produces a higher output voltage than the 7X(U) so may not
be suitable for charging some earlier models of phone.
In general, if the phone charges with the charger plugged in (some earlier
phones won't charge with a model 12 charger attached) then you should be
ok. Note however that the model 12 charger is a fast charger and may
shorten battery life on some phones.

My present phones are 6560 and 6610, both recent models I think. Does
that help decide which charger would be better? I'd say longer battery
life is more important than fast charging, I usually let it charge
overnight anyway. Thanks.

They should both be ok with the ACP-12. As I said the ACP-7 will take
longer, but an overnight charge is ok with either.
Personally, I don't care what the manuals or anyone else says, I always
let my battery run down until I get the low battery message on the phone,
I don't continually top up. If you have access to a desktop charger that
allows you to charge a battery independently of the phone this helps a
lot.

Thanks.

Not sure I undertand how you charge a battery independently of the
phone when it is inside the phone? Do you mean, keep a spare battery
charged and exchange them when one runs down?

Yes. I have a desktop charger (DCH-9) for my 6310i which will take a
phone, a spare battery, or both together. I charge a battery as soon as it
comes off the phone, and the one that was on the charger goes in the
phone.

The ACP7 is a 3.7V "trickle" charger. The ACP12 is a 5.7V "quick"
charger and will charge a handset quicker. It will not work with
earlier phones such as the 51XX/61XX series phones. I don't know if
it will work with the 71XX series of phones. It will work with newer
phones even the 33XX series. The ACP7 will work with all Nokia phones
or at least all the digital phones that Nokia has brought out over the
last five years or so. The ACP7 is usually the charger packed with
domestic models used in North America or in Europe the difference
being the voltage for the ACP7 used in North America is rated for 120V
while the chargers used in the UK and on continental Europe are rated
at ~230V with different plug configuration for the UK, continental
Europe and I imagine for other areas that have specific plug design.
The chargers however are basically the same whether used in North
America or Europe/Asia the primary voltage being the main difference
(along with plug configuration.) The ACP12U can be used on either 120
or 230V with the correct plug adapter.

If when you insert the charger lead/probe into the phone if it says
"charging" and the charge indicator scrolls it should mean that the
charger is OK to use with that phone. If upon inserting the probe
into the phone you get the message "not charging" it probably means
that you shouldn't use the ACP12 charger with it.
